Detroit is repurposing vacant land and abandoned spaces to expand its urban agriculture and culinary scene. Along East Warren Avenue, restaurants such as Baobab Fare are set to bring Burundian cuisine, including roasted goat and spiced coffee, to the area. In Core City, Vesper Books and Wine is transforming a historic Detroit Savings Bank branch into a new venue featuring wine, beer, and curated book selections. The city’s urban agriculture movement is supported by over 2,500 farms and gardens, facilitated by organizations like Keep Growing Detroit , which provides resources such as seeds, soil tests, and training. Many local restaurants, including Ladder 4 Wine Bar and Takoi, are integrating fresh produce from nearby urban farms into their menus. Detroit’s agricultural efforts recently advanced with the passage of an Animal Keeping Ordinance, legalizing the raising of chickens, ducks, and bees within city limits. Vineyards are so inviting, aren't they? If you like vineyards, you may like my devotional on John 15: Finding Delight in the Vineyard. Winter is the season for pruning...ugh. See how a viticulturist (grape grower) applies pruning to following Jesus. 😉 https://amzn.to/3kGQEg8

Matooke. In Buganda, matooke is more than just food; it is a symbol of identity, hospitality, and culture. This steamed banana dish holds a sacred place in the hearts and kitchens of the Baganda people, showcasing their deep connection to the land and their traditions. Matooke is the centerpiece of most meals, served during ceremonies, celebrations, and everyday family gatherings. It symbolizes wealth, as the size and health of a man’s banana plantation traditionally reflected his prosperity. Hosting a guest without serving matooke is considered unthinkable it represents generosity and respect. Preparing matooke is an art passed down through generations. Fresh, green bananas are peeled, wrapped in banana leaves, steamed until soft, and gently mashed. The dish is often paired with groundnut sauce, beef stew, or beans, making it versatile and delicious. Beyond its role on the plate, matooke holds agricultural importance. Banana plantations provide food security and income, reflecting the Baganda people’s intimate relationship with their environment. In a rapidly changing world, matooke remains a constant, uniting families and communities while preserving Buganda’s rich heritage. #tribe56

I 💕 this series (more than the previous two). However, I struggle to conflate this Clarkson with the gas-guzzling, climate-sceptic Clarkson of other media. 10m wide hedges with large buffer strips. Regen ag. Nature-friendly management. Love of wildlife. High welfare pigs and cattle plus tears when they hurt. Clarkson could be the UK’s most effective mainstream advocate for wildlife, the environment, and sustainable ag. However, I fear he may continue trumpeting an anti-progressive narrative for lucrative, right-wing columns, despite practising the opposite. I hope the progressive attitudes depicted in Clarkson's Farm are real, and that it will permeate his other media. It reminds me of my first graduate job, in change management consultancy, where I was taught the value of converting your greatest detractors, who often become your greatest advocates. Fingers crossed Clarkson goes on to preach what he practices 🤞 It would be a welcome change to those who preach sustainability whilst practising the opposite. #regenag #sustainability #naturepositive

🌿 Managing frost risk at Marlbank Vineyard Frost can devastate a vineyard, but careful planning minimizes the risk. Here’s how Marlbank manages frost: • Airflow and slope: Short grass and natural breezes guide frost to the stream. • Braziers: Fires at the bottom of rows draw frost away from vines. • Pruning timing: Buds are protected by leaving canes upright until frost risk subsides. Sustainable viticulture requires attention to every detail—especially during frost season. 🍇 Find out more about our vineyard: https://lnkd.in/egQGKvMF #Viticulture #FrostManagement #SustainableFarming

A good example of an engineering control that reduces risk for repetitive strain injuries while simultaneously improving production. Great return on investment.
The Grapevine Magazine recently published their Nov./Dec. issue focusing on: "Efficient and Cost-Effective Pruning Programs". In this issue, they highlight Infaco USA's F3020 Electric Pruners - a safe, ergonomic, durable & high-powered tool that many vineyards are adopting to cut costs and save time in spur & cane pruning. Another vital marker 📍 to proof that the plant based market is NOT in a slump or on its way out: Upfield recently made a bold move to make their Flora range 100% vegan again. And it’s paying off in a big way, according to new documents. 📃 Boasting record sales, the UK branch of the company has seen a turnover of £242 million in 2023, up from just under £228 million the previous year, with pre-tax profits soaring to £18 million from £10.5 million in 2022. 💰 This was followed from Upfield’s October 2023 announcement that all Flora Buttery products would be vegan, reversing a 2020 recipe change that had added buttermilk. 🌱 (Note: Flora had previously been plant-based since it was created in 1965…) This change alignes with Upfield’s goal of making all its products plant-based, though they sadly haven't confirmed a timeline for this transition yet. 👀 #FreedomFoodAlliance #VeganBusiness #PlantBased #Sustainability #FoodInnovation #FloraButtery #Upfield
