There was so much that I loved about INP's BLI Seattle cohort but I'll remain focused! AyeNay Abye's recent post highlighted the incredible 200+ hours we dedicated to the Institute for Nonprofit Practice's Black leadership Institute. The time flew bye… I was quietly observing as AyeNay shared the work being done at the Tubman Center for Health and Freedom, which was impressive. Their innovative approach to healthcare, particularly the language used in the Healing Center's & Freedom Clinic, emphasize: Collaborative Care Teams: Every patient is supported by a dedicated team of specialists, ensuring comprehensive wellness. Personalized Advocacy: The TUBMAN GUIDES serve as advocates, helping patients navigate their healthcare journey with personalized support. Holistic Services: From primary care to integrative medicine, they address physical, emotional, and social wellness. Including Acupuncture & Massage therapy! School-based health centers like the Freedom Clinic not only improve access to medical services but also enhance learning outcomes for scholars. This model was developed in direct response to the needs identified by RVLA scholars, families, and staff, demonstrating a true commitment to community-driven care. Kudos to AyeNay Abye and her colleagues for their dedication! I’m excited to see how these innovative approaches continues to evolve in 2025 and beyond. Former US Secretary and CEO of the Latino Community Foundation, Julián Castro and Noramay Cadena (Managing Partner, Supply Change Capital; Cofounder and Managing Partner, MiLA Capital; Board Director, Latino Community Foundation, CARE) joined NACD Northern California's Latino Cafecito today to dive into a dynamic discussion about how Latino directors are spearheading the flow of capital, both philanthropic and investment-oriented, to uplift their community and foster entrepreneurial growth. The session, moderated by Sandra R. Hernández, M.D. (President and CEO, California HealthCare Foundation; Board Director, 23andMe Inc., California Health Care Foundation, California Office of Health Care Affordability, National Academy of Medicine Leadership Consortium) was important in highlighting the importance of the Latino community in the U.S. and how board directors and philanthropists can support the pursuit of economic and social impact in this community. My colleague posted the following and it got me thinking…… Is Attending Leadership Conferences Worth It? We often hear about leadership conferences as a must-attend event for professional growth. But let’s be honest: are they truly worth the investment of time, energy, and resources? Some see these gatherings as a chance to network and learn from the best, while others dismiss them as overhyped, with little practical takeaways. The truth is, it depends on what you’re seeking. Here’s a perspective we don’t discuss enough: Action over Inspiration: Many walk away inspired, but few implement. The real return on investment isn’t in hearing powerful talks; it’s in translating them into actionable strategies for your team. Network versus Relationships: The value is not in the number of linkedin contacts but in the depth of connections made. Are we cultivating surface-level contacts, or building meaningful relationships. Real connection is exciting. Growth vs. Stagnation: is one being challenged by diverse perspectives, or hearing an echo of current beliefs? So, is it worth it? Only if one is determined to act. The commitment doesn’t end at the conference; it begins when you return to the office. Their journeys from Boys & Girls Club members to global icons highlight the influence of mentorship, opportunity, and community engagement in shaping successful leaders. For HBCU business schools, partnerships with celebrities and influential public figures provide a unique chance to inspire students, showcase diverse leadership, and open doors to industries that are often underrepresented. By leveraging the reach and impact of celebrities, HBCU business programs can: Elevate visibility of business education’s role in creating leaders across various industries. Foster partnerships that provide students with mentorship, internships, and leadership development opportunities. Increase access to high-ranking leadership roles for Black and Brown communities by breaking down barriers and building pipelines to success.
