Christoph in this excellent post nailed it and pretty much summed up one of my everyday missions, which is to persuade data teams, especially BI and Analytics teams, that the fundamentals of data modeling only grew in importance, rather than the other way around. Bill Inmons' contributions to DW, particularly in the foundations of DW from a top-down perspective, and to Business Intelligence, are among the many contributions that continue to make a significant impact on companies that rely on data to succeed. While modern tools simplify data storage (like better skis used in Christoph's analogy), neglecting the fundamentals (ski lessons) leads to poor quality and performance or even worse. We should never stop investing in fundamentals to ensure long-term data resilience and value generation.
Humans love shortcuts. 🛣 That's the way we are wired. When I went skiing a few weeks ago, I noticed that a lot of people skied way beyond their means. Modern skis are a lot easier to handle and many people now seem to skip the much needed classes. No surprise then that accidents are on the rise despite better (safety) equipment. Better skis don't make you a better skier. ⛷ The data world, too, started on a treacherous path to forget fundamentals when the data lake emerged. Why go through the pain of data modeling when you can just throw everything in a bunch of very large tables? Well, you can do that for sure, but don't be surprised if data quality, query performance and cost suffer. Does it really make sense to forget the fundamentals in the interest of cutting corners and saving time in the short term? A little investment sometimes goes a long way towards resilience. Over the weekend, I came across this photo with Bill Inmon. In 2010, I had the honor to be the MC for a workshop led by him in Linz, Austria. We spoke about data modeling back then. I remember an enthusiastic audience who was eager to learn and put best practices to action. And here we are in 2024 and need to nudge ourselves to do the basics again? Back to the future? If you want to learn a bit more about data modeling, take a look at a recent blog post authored by Tevje Olin. For a broader overview of the topic check out Joe Reis 🤓 who spoke at our Agile Data Engine Summit in November last year. (It was great to see that the audience was very engaged and took a lot of notes.)
