Inspiring, informative, and excellently presented talk by Celeste Queiroz Logical assessment of broad sources of uncertainty and the reasoning level necessary for defining, describing, and communicating uncertainty in a way that enables investors to map against their appetites for risk as they make informed decisions. (special note on example Celeste Queiroz presents on incorporating density! Absolutely agree: classifications based purely on drill spacing, without consideration of key factors of density can be overly optimistic, and therefore does not meet expectations around definitions of classification levels).

First day of the P&A workshop. Two things struck me: how good the gig is working out and how engaging regulators and scientists can be. Of course, it is no stroke of luck that the 5 hours were smooth as silk: the professionalism and cool-headedness of Nathaly, Victoria and Haley have been impressive. Taming tigers more than herding cats. As for the presentations, they were all high grade, worth listening on demand for those of us who couldn't attend. Can't even begin to list them all, but if I had to pick one it would be Miles Ponsonby's: his explanation was flawless, with just a zest of irony and a delivery worth of a Monarch's Speech. If you read this far, there was a statement that got me thinking: somebody commented that there's nothing wrong with each of the 50 US states having different (and mind-bogglingly prescriptive) regulations, since they have different geology. We shouldn't strive from a common approach to P&A. Now, there is poetry in letting a hundred flowers bloom, but geology is not state-specific: Haynesville shale behaves like the Eocene shales in Norway - and it covers two states. Yes, regulation must adapt to the challenge. But, as Shanna Nolan and Leah Davies pointed out, this is what next-gen risk-based regulations are about. What do you think? Shall we all strive to come up with a common approach? Or let every hamlet decide on the length of plugs (because grampa always did it this way)?

A good article on the history and future of CREG, what we are trying to achieve, and the legacy we are building on…
The Ralph J. Roberts Center for Research in Economic Geology (CREG) will celebrate its 30th year at the University of Nevada, Reno in 2026. In its first 28 years, CREG has built a strong history in the Silver State. https://bit.ly/3Bzam5V
