What are the barriers that #GeoscienceYPs and #graduates are facing that stops them pursuing a career in the #EnergySector ? - Lack of educational and job opportunities ? - Job security concerns ? - Lack of career information ? - Salary levels ? - Cost of study especially when an Msc is the base line entry requirement ? - Societal pressure and judgement ? - Personal conscience ? I was fortunate to meet with YP representatives from #AAPG #GESGB and #SPE last week to explore this question as part of the work i am doing with the skills group at the #subsurfacetaskforce ( led by Graham Goffey ). The group aims to support and encourage the next generation of #geoscientists . The current geoscientist graduates will be the #changeagents critical to driving the #energytransition through the applications of geosciences to diverse tasks from traditional #oilandgas #CCS; #hydrogenstorage; #renewableenergy, #geothermal, #lithium exploration to #hydrogeology and so much more. So given this exciting future - with diversity of task and exciting challenges that will contribute to providing #energyforsociety for decades to come - why are people either not studying geosciences or are leaving the field of geoscience once they graduate? Are you a recent graduate who has left the field of Geosciences ? Did you want to study Geosciences but opted for something else ? I would be interested to know why as this could help us to put the right support in place to support other graduates.
Last week, I had the pleasure of meeting Catherine Allsop, Vice President Subsurface at Equinor, at the London offices where the London AAPG YP, the Subsurface Task Force UK, and I, conferred to discuss the future of the energy sector, the importance of #STEM #education, and the relevance of our students and young professionals today. Together, we aim to bring innovative ideas and pass on valuable knowledge to the forthcoming generations of geoscientists in the UK and beyond; it will take time but all great achievements require time. Do you have a ticket for our upcoming Christmas Party at Radisson Blu Royal Garden Hotel on Monday, November 25th? Visit the following link to purchase your tickets: https://lnkd.in/djseFXTk The first speaker of the evening will be Dmitri Gorski from "Heavelock Solutions" and "Nicoustic", who will be giving a talk titled "Non-intrusive acoustic level measurement in separator vessels - first offshore pilot". Dmitri Gorski holds a PhD in process engineering and an MBA in technology management. He has spent around 15 years working with brownfield and greenfield projects for Statoil/Equinor as well as with technology development and commercialization for small companies and start-ups. Today, he holds CEO positions in Heavelock Solutions and Nicoustic. The latter is a spin-off from Equinor and Fraunhofer IKTS set to develop non-intrusive level measurement in process tanks. Abstract of the presentation: Accurate measurement of liquids and solids level in process vessels such as oil and gas separators is important for safety, production optimization as well as for minimizing CO2 emissions and dosage of chemical additives. Non-intrusive measurement of level offers opportunities to significantly decrease installation and maintenance costs as well as to increase personnel safety and instrument reliability. Non-intrusive level measurement is a good fit for Greenfield projects, and it is great in Brownfield context. Mature fields often have increasing challenges with solids and emulsions, something they are seldom equipped to measure. Retrofitting intrusive level measurement equipment on a producing asset is prohibitively expensive; production needs to be stopped for at least a week and the project becomes part of turnaround scope. Technologies widely used for level measurement in process equipment today are intrusive. Behind Nicoustic is many years of advanced research in Guided Ultrasonic Waves at Fraunhofer IKTS (Dresden) combined with determination of Equinor to improve level measurement on its assets. The first field trial of Nicoustic non-intrusive level sensors has started on Snorre A in April this year. In parallel with that, a Joint Industry Project (JIP) aimed at further advancing this technology has been initialized with broad support from 6 Norwegian and International operator companies. This presentation will describe the development effort behind the technology, the first results of its piloting and the implications it has for cost and emission reductions on existing and future assets.

At the Engineers and Geoscientists BC AGM registrants voted in-person and online in favour of the two motions aimed to support the BC Society of Engineering and Geoscience (BCSEG). Motion 1: That the Board consider providing the BCSEG with suitable ongoing funding to support an effective transition period over the next 3 to 5 years. Motion 2: That the Board consider maintaining existing programs identified for termination/transition to BCSEG, with adequate resourcing, until such a time as BCSEG is financially positioned to take on the role of delivering these programs. The motions are non-binding and will be considered by the Board at a future meeting. Learn more: https://ow.ly/LeFN50U0Jt4

🚀 Unlocking Digital Transformation: Bridging the Gap Between Domain Experts and Software Developers In digital transformation, success hinges on the effective collaboration between domain experts and software developers. 🌐 So, what’s does it take? Both domain experts and software developers need to level up their competencies. 📚 Domain experts must embrace technology, while software developers must stretch to understand more of the domain. This synergy bridges the knowledge gap and paves the way for robust digital solutions that tackle real-world challenges. 💡 🌊 Insights from the visit on Fugro Synergy This week I, and my colleagues in NGI Digital Truls Martens and Cecilie Authén, had the privilege of stepping aboard the survey vessel Fugro Synergy. We were there to learn about the work processes behind offshore geotechnical data collection. 🌊 What we witnessed was awe-inspiring: the five different teams on the vessel cooperating efficiently to ensure data quality, even under challenging conditions. Out at sea, soil properties are largely unknown, and engineers must make real-time decisions to ensure that high-quality data is gathered efficiently. 🌏📈 A heartfelt shout-out to Noor Laham, H. Kursat Engin and Liam McDonald, who graciously guided us through the vessel. Their expertise and passion for the field left us inspired. 🙌 And Pål Erik Gjerde and Sarah Elkhatib, thank you for arranging for this visit. 🙏🔍 Fugro, thank you for opening your doors and allowing us in to explore and learn from your experts. We look forward to taking the information back to the team and use it in the development of FieldManager that Aker BP ASA now uses collect, store and share geotechnical data from the field and the lab. 🚀 #NGI, #FieldManager, #innovation, #digitalization
