How Ringer’s Lactate Solution Helps Manage Seizures in Canine Distemper? Treating Canine Distemper becomes especially challenging when seizures develop. One key supportive therapy is Ringer’s Lactate Solution (LRS), which plays a vital role in stabilizing affected dogs. Here’s how LRS supports seizure management: 1. Corrects Electrolyte Imbalances: LRS replenishes critical electrolytes like potassium, calcium, and sodium, which are essential for proper nerve and muscle function, helping to reduce seizure risk. 2. Reverses Metabolic Acidosis: Distemper often causes acidosis, which worsens seizures. The lactate in LRS is converted into bicarbonate, restoring pH balance and stabilizing the brain. 3. Improves Circulation: Dehydration reduces blood flow to the brain. LRS rehydrates the dog, restoring oxygen delivery and preventing neurological deterioration. 4. Supports Energy Needs: Seizures can drain energy reserves. While LRS doesn’t contain glucose, it can be supplemented with dextrose to fuel the brain. Ringer’s Lactate Solution not only rehydrates but also addresses the metabolic and neurological complications that fuel seizures, giving dogs with distemper a better chance at recovery. #VeterinaryMedicine #CanineDistemper #SeizureManagement #AnimalCare

One of the challenges of paralysis in dogs, is that they still want to participate in our lives. So they scoot. Scooting injuries to the feet and insides of the lower limbs are common in our paralyzed patients as they heal. And for clients, one of the advantages of seeing a physical therapist that is also a vet -- we can prescribe antibiotics, assess progress in healing, apply proper bandaging and recommend appropriate treatments without having to return to your vet. #scooting #draggingfeet #footsores #ivdddog #fce #paralysisdog #healingartsvet #veterinarymedicineisanart #scopeofpractice #vetrehab

🐾 ** Medial Branch Block for Low Back Pain in Dogs** 🐾 Facet joint arthrosis is a major culprit behind epaxial muscle spasms and spastic pain, which often contribute to low back pain in our canine companions. 😔 When conservative therapies like medication and physical rehabilitation fail to provide relief, it’s time to consider a more targeted approach. 💉 **Medial Branch Block** is an excellent diagnostic and therapeutic option to identify and manage this pain effectively. By targeting the nerves that supply the facet joints, we can pinpoint the source of discomfort and, in many cases, provide significant pain relief for your furry friend. 🐶 🏥 Talk to your veterinary specialist about whether a medial branch block might be the solution for your dog’s chronic back pain. Their quality of life matters, and innovative treatments like this can make all the difference! #VeterinaryMedicine #LowBackPain #DogHealth #MedialBranchBlock #PainManagement #FacetJointPain #CanineCare #nysoravet

📢 Case Highlight: Tracheal Collapse in a 5-Year-Old Bichon Havanese We recently diagnosed a 5-year-old Bichon Havanese with Grade III tracheal collapse. This condition has been causing a persistent, dry, and harsh cough. 🚨 Signs to Watch For: • Respiratory distress • Persistent cough • Cyanotic mucous membranes and tongue • Abnormal respiratory noises 🩺 Management and Prognosis: Tracheal collapse often presents progressive signs throughout a dog’s life. The prognosis largely depends on the severity of the collapse and the response to medical management. Key treatments include: • Bronchodilators • Cough suppressants • Oxygen therapy (in severe cases) For the most severe cases, the use of prosthetic stents may be necessary. Identifying and grading the level of tracheal collapse (Grades I-IV) via chest radiographs is crucial for effective treatment planning. Ensuring early diagnosis and appropriate management can significantly improve the quality of life for these pets. #VeterinaryMedicine #TrachealCollapse #PetHealth #DogCare #VeterinaryCare #AnimalWelfare #PetOwners
