Cade you are capable of great things

I’m thrilled to share that I attended the CGLS! 🤭 It’s amazing how God connects us to what we need in every season of our lives. A few years ago, as a young girl unsure of her path or how to become the successful woman I wanted to be, I stumbled upon this summit while scrolling through social media. I told myself, 'One day, I have to be there.' Fast forward to this year, when a dear friend sent me a link to register, and it felt like a dream come true. I didn’t hesitate to sign up! I’m beyond grateful for all I’ve learned at the event and for the incredible people I had the chance to meet. Some of my key takeaways include: 1. There's so much excellence in the world, but referencing God makes the difference. 2. You don’t get medals for trying once, keep trying! 3. Great leaders produce amazing results, even in uncomfortable situations or with challenging instructions. 4. God doesn’t use perfect people, His grace works best through our weaknesses. He specializes in using those with limitations. 5. Every leader has a helper. 6. Leadership is not about a position but the ability to solve problems in the field God has called you to. 7. Focus is essential for building, it's the lifeline and backbone of vision. 8. Focus overcomes obstacles because when you see the gains, you forget the pains. 9. By gazing intently, you become engrossed. 10. Don’t compare yourself to others, just because you aren’t something doesn’t mean you’re nothing. It was an unforgettable experience, and I’m excited to take what I’ve learned into the next season of my life!

Chances are, you may not have thought about Age Discrimination..? I hadn't either until recently, it seems the older I get, the more I become aware of my own unconscious biases towards getting older. This was my first time chairing our DEI group, and I really want to drive actions from conversation, so here are my take aways... One of the many things we discussed was how people (particularly younger people!) are less likely to recruit older people. For me, I certainly recognised this in myself when I recruited for a role in my 20s. Upon reflection, I think I felt threatened and wouldn't know how to manage/lead someone with more experience. My own insecurities could have got in the way of someone else's opportunity. I've been doing some self-reflection, and have so far committed to the below as a starting point: 1. Stop looking at the education section of CVs to gauge how old a candidate is...age is not an indication of maturity Catherine! 🤦🏽♀️ 2. If I find myself interviewing someone older than me, don't be threatened by it. Different experiences make strong teams (you should know this by now Catherine!)💪🏽 3. Be age inclusive: recruit from all age groups, create an environment for shared learning, plus identity and support issues specific to older workers 👌🏽 4. Use age inclusive language: older and younger. No need for anything else 🗣 Thank you again to everyone involved! A day or so in London, this time for the Events industry, Cross Association, DEI Working Group. People in the events world never cease to amaze me. How they can be unfazed by challenges, and deal with them with a confident smile and a plan almost as if the unexpected is expected. The fact that that it was also the first day for Catherine Beck as Chair of a large industry cross networking group when the main speaker is suddenly unable to attend, demonstrates not only her resourcefulness, but also that in their world there is no translation for the word crisis! There was so much to glean from the meeting. This is an industry going through change and it means doing something we focus on a lot in Mindsmith Thinking, changing perspective. It was great to hear how companies were improving, staffing to address the effects of the long hours culture,the way age and experience are viewed, and continuing to push the boundaries with flexible working and paternity leave. All necessary steps in an industry that has to be creatively focused on outcomes, but having a growing realisation that people organisations are having to become equally creative with the talent that produces them. The Chair concluded with the clarion call for "less talk, more action". This is a group where things will happen, in an industry in need of the ideas and support. A really productive meeting hosted at the New Scientist Building and thanks to the AEO Association of Event Organisers and ESSA team for making the arrangements.
