Meet Guy Maalouf, 26 years old and one of the 13 doctoral candidates in the WildDrone network. Guy’s Ph.D. focuses on Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) drone technology— an essential approach that allows drones to operate over long distances while maintaining the highest levels of safety and reliability. This capability is crucial for nature conservation efforts, especially in remote areas like the Wadden Sea National Park and Kenyans Conservancies, where vast landscapes make it difficult to monitor wildlife and ecosystems using traditional methods 🦒 By developing adaptive systems that integrate seamlessly with existing air traffic management (UTM) frameworks, Guy’s work enables drones to operate safely and autonomously, even in areas with minimal infrastructure. DRONE BATHYMETRY Bathymetry is the measurement of the depth of water in oceans, rivers, or lakes. Bathymetric maps look similar to topographic maps, but use lines to show the shape and elevation of underwater features as opposed to land. With drone bathymetry, we can safely analyze coastal and shallow areas as easily as we can open water. EMS provides high- precision coastal mapping in support of Tidal Boundary Surveys. In this case, various control points were set and coordinate data collected via RTK survey methods. These reference points were used by our FAA-certified drone pilot to calibrate aerial imagery to real-world coordinates and land boundaries. This can be a crucial component in helping to establish the Mean High Water (MHW) line that defines publicly-owned tidelands.

NACAS in the field - Remote Pilot and researcher Tayhlia was out in the field recently collecting some vegetation data with the Ebee X. This fixed-wing drone is capable of covering large areas and collecting multispectral data. This is great for detecting different types of vegetation, including invasive species.
