What does a day in the life of a woman in construction look like? Thank you to Clémence Tyrel de Poix for sharing her day! A Day in the Life of an Assistant Quantity Surveyor (Post 1 of 2!): Every day brings new challenges, opportunities, and some routine tasks. As a consultant or professional quantity surveyor (QS) working on the client side, I typically juggle five or more projects, depending on their size and complexity. While some professionals specialize in sectors like housing, healthcare, leisure, commercial, or industrial, others, like myself, enjoy the variety of working across multiple sectors. I start my day by organizing my inbox, prioritizing tasks, setting up meetings, and planning travel. This helps ensure that my day is structured and efficient. I then select tasks that meet deadlines and can be completed without becoming overwhelming. I believe in taking short breaks and even power naps to stay productive. The tasks I perform depend on whether my role is strictly as a QS or also includes responsibilities as an employer's agent (EA) or contractor administrator (CA). Here are some of the typical tasks: Pre-Contract: Cost planning, cost estimates, and feasibility studies Bills of quantities and measurements Value engineering Tender preparation and review Funding Contracts preparation Cost reporting Planning Sustainability recommendations Risk analysis Post-Contract: Valuations Cost reports Contract management Design review Value engineering Minute-taking Additionally there are additional miscellaneous task I’ll perform during the day: Miscellaneous: Cost Database creation / update Networking Social value focus group (support IC and its employees to reach social value targets) Sustainability focus group (support IC and its employees to reach sustainable targets) Research in topic of interest Socialise with colleagues Empty and fill the dishwasher Check if the plants are still alive Open the curtains and the windows to make sure my colleagues get enough daylight. Bring snacks for the team Check out our next post for some advice for aspiring quantity surveyors...

How some Project Managers / Quantity Surveyors react to project problems:- · Blame the contractor · Agree with the client (as they pay our fees) · Offer superficial solutions without addressing the root cause The outcome = Short-term fix → Displeased client → No repeat work. How Project Managers / Quantity Surveyors should actually be reacting: · Anticipating potential issues and addressing them proactively · Conducting a comprehensive assessment of the entire situation · Providing transparent and practical advice to the client The outcome = Long-term resolution → Satisfied client → Repeat work. Encourage ongoing collaboration rather than one-time engagements. #ProjectManagement #ProblemSolving #ClientSatisfaction #ProactiveApproach #TransparentCommunication #RepeatBusiness #RootCauseAnalysis

Quantity Surveying is one of the most versatile career decisions you could ever make. 👇 Here's why ... Quantity Surveyors have the option of becoming the following: Estimators 💰 Contract Managers 📃 Commercial Managers 🏧 Development Managers 🌐 Construction Lawyers 👨⚖️ Adjudicators and Expert Witness 👁️ Cost Consultants 💲 Project Managers 🏗️ I know highly successful professionals who have started off as a QS and have built Construction Companies that are now listed on the stock exchange. 🤯 I know QS's that have become heads of departments for Tier 1 Contractors and manage billion dollar profit and loss accounts.🔥 I know QS's who have built incredibly successful property development businesses, selling apartments at $15m a piece.💭 I know QS's who have used their careers to travel all over the world and work on the most incredible projects from NEOM to the Sydney Opera House.🌎 Whilst Quantity Surveying is incredibly undervalued in Australia, don't sleep on it as a profession.💤 It's a gateway to the world of construction. 🔐 #QuantitySurveying #CostManagement
