Meta’s Decision to End Fact-Checking: A Step Forward or Backward? The recent announcement from Meta to end its fact-checking program in the USA—and likely other countries to follow—is a pivotal (or perhaps repetitive) moment for content within the worlds largest walled garden. This decision raises crucial questions about the integrity of online information and the responsibility of platforms. I came across an insightful Open Letter from leading organizations in the fact-checking industry, offering a compelling counterpoint from those directly impacted Poynter Institute. A key statement stood out: "Most importantly, we believe the decision to end Meta’s third-party fact-checking program is a step backward for those who want to see an internet that prioritizes accurate and trustworthy information." As someone deeply invested in the future of media and advertising, I can’t help but wonder: How will major brands navigate the risks of being positioned next to content with conflicting definitions of what’s ‘acceptable’? Ultimately big brands will be very quick to decide if Meta is good for them.... or not!

In an effort to explore key lessons from the #subscription economy while steering clear of recent controversies, Meta's latest moves offer much to reflect on. The introduction of an ad-free subscription model in #Europe and a shift toward less personalized ad targeting underline two major priorities: enhancing user #autonomy and meeting #regulatory demands. I see this as a prime opportunity to draw insights from Meta’s approach. Here are four key #takeaways for players in the subscription economy: 1️⃣ User #Empowerment: Ad-free options and less intrusive targeting build trust and enhance satisfaction. 2️⃣ #Regulatory Alignment: Compliance with stringent standards is now a baseline for operating globally. 3️⃣ Revenue Model #Innovation: Subscriptions diversify income streams and meet evolving user expectations. 4️⃣ #Transparent Practices: Sharing the "why" behind changes fosters credibility in a competitive landscape. Meta’s strategy demonstrates how digital businesses can navigate regulatory challenges while keeping user experience front and center. At Billwerk+, we know that a thriving #subscription economy is built on #transparency, #adaptability, and user #choice. #DigitalTransformation #BusinessStrategy #Subscription #CustomerCentric #FutureOfTech #Innovation #CXStrategy #DataPrivacy #Billwerk

How to End Meta Now! =============== Build a migration path from Meta/Facebook/Threads/Instagram to the Fediverse, and place ads on Facebook, to let people migrate to the Fediverse very easily. The ad will compare the Fediverse with Facebook and advertise the benefits of openness and freedom. On clicking the ad, the user will optionally be asked a few questions, and be matched with a Fediverse instance based on their interests. The user can also skip the questions, and choose a random instance. The user will also be offered the option to join a "Migration Registry" to re-connect with their Facebook friends on the Fediverse. The user's profile will be migrated to the chosen Fediverse instance, along with all data, and contacts. If they used the "Migration Registry", the user will be reconnected with all their Facebook friends, who also opted into the registry during the Migration. Re-union in Heaven, or the Fediverse ( close enough ). 1. Meta is obligated to allow Exodus2Mastodon ads, otherwise they would face antitrust law. 2. Meta is officially no longer exercising editorial control over their content. This strategy was once adopted by organizations that wanted to create online platforms for discussion, discussion boards etc, without being liable for the content. This means that Meta is obligated to not forbid Exodus2Mastodon ads. 3. Exodus2Mastodon could be its own website, advertised on non Meta platforms. 4. Exodus2Mastodon will automate the process of exporting user data ( posts, likes, media, contacts etc ) from Meta, and importing it into a newly created Mastodon profile. 5. During the migration, the user will be offered an opt-in into the Registry. 6. Also, during the migration the user can choose to automatically notify their friends of their move to Mastodon ( email, Meta-platform posts, etc ). The message will include a short paragraph introducing the Fediverse, and its benefits. Something like: "Hello Jim, I am moving out of Facebook to Mastodon. Facebook is a closed platform. Meta corporation has already been caught illegally selling their user information. It's time for a better platform, a free one, an uncensored one, a platform not for profit, but for people. Click here to opt out of Facebook. Let's meet in the place where there is no darkness. Peace! ~ Ashwin." The network effect, and word of mouth will kill Meta quickly. #Fediverse #Mastodon #Facebook #Meta #Software #FreeSoftware #FSF #GNU #Threads #Instagram #SocialMedia #FreeSpeech #Censorship #FuckZuck #TheSocialNetwork #SocialNetwork

Meta’s move from fact-checking to Community Notes has us thinking—what does this mean for brands? Without verified labels, misinformation might spread, making it harder to build trust. Brands could need to work harder (and spend more) to educate audiences and maintain credibility. And if trust in content drops, ad performance could take a hit too. How are you planning to adapt? Let’s talk! 👇 (Source: https://lnkd.in/gg6kgUmR) #SocialMedia #BrandTrust #B2BMarketing #Meta

🚨 Goodbye Fact-Checkers: Meta’s Controversial Shift in Content Moderation 🚨 Meta’s decision to eliminate fact-checkers, reduce content restrictions, and shift to a crowd-sourced approach to moderation marks a bold move towards prioritizing free speech, but it comes with significant risks. While this could empower users and reduce censorship concerns, it also opens the door to increased misinformation and harmful content. Meta faces the challenge of maintaining trust and safety on its platforms by dialling back its content filters and relying on user reports. As businesses and creators, we must now navigate a more open yet potentially volatile digital space. Is this a necessary evolution of free speech, or does it risk eroding accountability?
