This week, the workshop on Heterogeneous Integration in Integrated Photonics organized by ePIXfab - the European Silicon Photonics Alliance took place in Paris-Saclay. Four photonixFAB partners contributed to insightful training sessions covering almost the entire photonics value chain from design challenges (Luceda Photonics), available integrated photonics (UGhent/imec) and heterogeneous integration platforms (X-FAB) to packaging challenges (PHIX Photonics Assembly). #HeterogeneousIntegration #siliconphotonics

🌟 Key takeaways from Photonics West 2024! 🌟 Attending Photonics West 2024 has left me inspired and hopeful for the future of photonics. The collective belief in our new technological era will advance these innovations and overcome the challenges ahead. Here are some of my takeaways from this event: - The Emergence of the Photonics Age: Just like the rise of semiconductors and the internet before, we're on the cusp of a new era. The optimism and determination to overcome the challenges of bringing new technologies to market were palpable among the attendees. - Businesses are collectively identify and clear obstacles to commercializing quantum technology, resolving high-volume manufacturing and supply chain issues, and identifying early use cases beyond the lab. - Innovation in Transparent Conductive Oxides (TCOs): The conference highlighted the development of TCOs for use in photonic integrated circuits (PICs). The collaboration between TCO researchers and silicon photonics foundries is paving the way for significant advancements. - Overcoming Challenges with Opportunities: Integrating TCOs into PICs presents challenges, but also immense opportunities for innovation, especially in developing high-efficiency electro-optic modulators and TCO-based devices. - The push for to commercialize various other emerging technologies, including micro-optics and microLEDs. - The Power of Collaboration and Community: A recurring theme was the importance of collaboration and community in driving technological progress. The discussions around commercialization challenges and the necessity of partnerships across technologies were incredibly insightful. This collaborative spirit is what will define our generation's legacy in technology. - Presentation on the RETINA project: I presented our new work on the RETINA EU project, sharing insights into how integrated photonics can drive industry-wide transformations and discussing the project's outlook. Gained a lot of positive feedback and interest from numerous industrial players! - Reuniting with EPIC - EUROPEAN PHOTONICS INDUSTRY CONSORTIUM Members: Reconnected with peers from the EPIC community, reinforcing the value of our network and the collaborative spirit essential for innovation and advancement in the photonics sector. Pilot Photonics CTO Frank Smyth, was in Canada last month in order to present the latest data from our integrated comb laser assembly (iCLA) in a talk entitled 'Integrated Comb Laser Assembly for Coherent Transceiver Scaling'. Speaking at the Optica Advanced Photonics Congress in the beautiful city of Quebec, Frank identified opportunities for the iCLA technology in both #opticalcommunication and #mmWave applications. Explaining the technology, Frank says: 'Our integrated comb laser can be used in the transmitter to stitch multiple channels together as a single multi-wavelength channel, or at the receive side to coherently slice a larger bandwidth channel into multiple segments that can be received with lower bandwidth components. Both functions are important as a route to increasing channel capacity as component bandwidths in the traditional PIC materials of InP and SOI begin to get saturated.' #optical_frequency_comb #optical_communication #photonic_integration
