Researchers from the Fraunhofer Institute for Photonic Microsystems (IPMS), in collaboration with HOLOEYE Photonics AG, have developed a compact liquid crystal-on-silicon (LCOS) microdisplay with high refresh rates that enables improved optical modulation. LCOS microdisplays are characterized by their low power consumption, small size, and lightweight design. They are used in switchable adaptive optics, particularly as phase modulators, and as projection displays in AR and VR. Phase modulators, also known as spatial light modulators (SLMs), are used in biological imaging and microscopy, among other applications, for wavefront correction and beam shaping. The goal is to improve image resolution, minimize distortions caused by biological tissue, or protect samples.

The standard analysis of #batterycells is based on CT scans, revealing what’s going on deep inside the battery by 3D data. Our growing R&D team is utilizing a cutting-edge virtual reality technology, allowing anyone to immerse themselves in the inner workings of battery cells through a virtual reality headset. By accessomg digital twins of the battery cell, the new technology is helping to enhance analysis and to drive continuous improvements in battery technology. For example, we are now able to observe the behavior of a battery cell under pressure in 3D, simulating real-world accident scenarios. 🗞 Electronic News! 🗞 Researchers in Germany have developed a compact liquid crystal on silicon microdisplay with high refresh rates that enables improved optical modulation for holographic displays. The fast CMOS backplane developed by the Fraunhofer Institute for Photonic Microsystems is helping Holoeye Photonics develop the microdisplay with a a resolution of 1440 x 1080 pixels and a pixel size of 2.5 µm and high speed spacial light modulation . Dedicated microLED display fabs are hereby an unlikely solution since older generation fabs used for compound semiconductor (e.g. 4”-6”) do not have the capability and precision while Si-CMOS fabs (e.g. 200mm/300mm) require a very large CAPEX that during the slow AR market ramp up would be under-utilized for several years. Process and tool compatibility to existing CMOS foundries is therefore a must. At pitches below 5um, the CMOS bonding is at the center and cannot be considered as an afterthought of a great LED process. In this presentation we discuss different option for CMOS integration, color generation and how they influence cost effective volume manufacturing."
