This is spot on. Without access to (prepped) C-suite spokespeople coupled with a lack of urgency when media opportunity knocks, the best PR efforts frustratingly come to naught. Having been on the newsroom side for the first few decades of my career, from lifestyle and breaking news to investigative and consumer, I like to think I can spot a good story and angle when I see one. And I understand a few things around speed. But when I think of some of the incredible media opportunities – front page stuff in one case – lost by clients due to this no-access-no-hurry nonsense, I could weep. It’s sadly not limited to a particular sector or location; from big tech to education, global think tanks to local NGOs, it’s about ignorance more than arrogance. It’s where ad hoc PR and reputation work gets tricky; there’s little time for groundwork. With engaged retainer clients, the readiness and alignment work with Exco starts way before any media outreach does. And that makes all the difference. #publicrelations #reputation #mediarelations
