Stroke Week is an annual event dedicated to raising awareness about stroke prevention, treatment, and recovery. It aims to educate the public on recognizing the signs of a stroke, such as sudden weakness, speech difficulty, and facial drooping, using the F.A.S.T. method (Face, Arms, Speech, Time). The week encourages everyone to learn how to respond quickly and effectively to a stroke, which can significantly improve outcomes and save lives. It also promotes lifestyle changes, such as regular exercise, healthy eating, and managing blood pressure, to reduce the risk of stroke. By highlighting the importance of early intervention and prevention, Stroke Week seeks to support stroke survivors, their families, and caregivers, fostering a community of awareness and care. April, known as Parkinson's Awareness Month, is a pivotal time for those of us battling this disease. It's about pushing forward, keeping momentum, and highlighting the organizations that support us. Living with Parkinson's presents daily challenges, but it's important to remember we're not defined by our symptoms. Sharing our experiences can foster understanding, turning these hurdles into catalysts for empathy and support. The Parkinson's Foundation and the Michael J. Fox Foundation are just two organizations that underscore the critical need for research. While a cure remains elusive, every scientific breakthrough brings us closer. The funds these organizations raise fuel this essential research, fostering hope. This month is a testament to our shared resilience. It's a call to keep moving, to stay informed, and to support each other. Together, we'll keep the momentum alive in our journey with Parkinson's.

I would like to thank all those who continue to support St. Jude Fairways for Hope. St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital remains a beacon of hope, inspired by the saint’s legacy and rooted in the belief that no child should die in the dawn of life. 1. A Mission of Hope: St. Jude symbolizes hope in the face of hopelessness. Danny Thomas wanted the hospital to provide hope for children suffering from catastrophic diseases like cancer. 2. Free Treatment: One of its unique principles is that families never receive a bill for treatment, travel, housing, or food, ensuring financial struggles don’t hinder a child’s care. A 3. Focus on Research: St. Jude is not only a hospital but also a research center, pioneering breakthroughs in the treatment of childhood cancers and other life-threatening illnesses.

Such a great korero on Tuesday morning organised by Lyttelton Community House. With Karla and I talking about Advanced Care Plans and Wills. It is empowering to know that there are tools available to help us to ensure our wishes are carried out when we can't speak for ourselves. Less than 50% of people that are of age do not have a will and an even lower % have enduring powers of attorney. I don't know the stats but I would suspect that less then 30% of people over the age of 18 have an advanced care plan. This is a discussion for all ages and not just those over 70 or with serious illness. I thank Lyttelton Community House for raising the topic and giving space for these important conversations. The discussion in the room, highlighted how much we care for those around us and how much easier it can be to support them if we know their wishes. Difficult conversations can be held on taboo topics when those engaged in the conversation know it is about love and care. Sometimes it is easier to face those difficult possibilities now while you are well, rather than when you are in the pain and stress of the situation. Thanks to Karla for enlightening us. 🧠💜 Today is World Alzheimer’s Day! At Recovia, we recognize the profound impact that Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia have on individuals, families, and caregivers. As we work to support those dealing with chronic conditions, we stand in solidarity with the millions affected by this disease. Did you know? Alzheimer’s affects memory, thinking, and behavior, progressively damaging the brain. While there is no cure yet, early intervention, physical therapy, mental stimulation, and support systems can help improve quality of life. On this day, let's raise awareness, break the stigma, and support the ongoing fight to find a cure. Together, we can make a difference! 💪

Did you know that 5,000 kids are born with congenital cardiac defects in our country each year? Did you know that pneumonia is one of the most common causes of death among children? Many of these youngsters come from low-income families, which means they cannot afford to obtain medical care. This is the difficult truth we face. Humans' natural instinct is to help others, yet due to the large number of cases, some are left unsupported. Budimas sees this as a serious issue; children should be given another opportunity at a better life. That is why we launched the Budimas Children's Medical Care Fund (BCMCF). BCMCF began as a one-time campaign in 2022 and has since evolved into a lifeline for underprivileged children in need of financial support for critical treatments for conditions such as heart disease and others. The impact has been great, giving many young children a second opportunity at life. Because of its significant impact, BCMCF is no longer a one-time campaign, but rather one of Budimas' key activities. Since then, we've assisted 22 underprivileged children in undergoing crucial operations and receiving required medical treatments, showing that there is always hope. Let us get together to heal and aid. Every contribution counts, and every act of kindness makes such an enormous difference. Give a child a new start, heal their life, and mend their heart.

Being a caregiver to someone who has a neurodegenerative disease is not easy, and my husband would say, "Try being the one living with the disease!" But after a ten-year journey with his Parkinson's diagnosis, Eric and I have found the silver lining in the people who have come into our lives professionally and personally. Check out my latest column, PD: The WE Journey in Parkinson's News Today, where I talk about how grateful we are for these people. https://lnkd.in/eXNHeaMp
Our journey’s silver lining has been the Parkinson’s community
