How far can we push the boundaries of ChatGPT? Star Citizen, the $700M+ crowdfunded online game, is a groundbreaking project still in its alpha phase. While its upcoming single-player campaign is set to showcase advanced AI systems, the live-test multiplayer experience has limited AI integration—understandably so, given the focus on developing core features and systems during this stage of its evolution. I wanted to explore what might be possible even within these constraints. Meet "Lydia", the personality behind an NPC powered by a custom ChatGPT integration. Since Star Citizen doesn’t provide an API for formal integration, I developed a novel bridging solution to make this work. The result? An NPC that can interact with players in real-time—using the in-game communication system to talk and select appropriate emotes, all within the game engine. The added realism dramatically enhances immersion. This project highlights the flexibility of modern off-the-shelf AI solutions and their potential to expand interactivity, even in dynamic, evolving environments like Star Citizen. For clarity, this project is not affiliated with Cloud Imperium Games, nor representative of typical gameplay in Star Citizen. Learning from Euro 2024: when you introduce a new technology, people tend to overestimate its usability. VAR technology is one example with the recent Germany-Denmark offsite case: I was surprised to see how many people took it granted that wahetever is shown with avatars and lines, MUST be the exact and infinitely precise situation. Another example, "we asked ChatGPT..." articles. Aka using ChatGPT for "opinion forming" or "chance calculating" - the LLM built communication is so cool and smooth that people assum a deeper meaning behind it. I remember when people discovered the internet (and later: mobile internet). Since the technology in principle allowed real-time information, users mostly assumed that whatever they find there is indeed the latest and close to real-time. And now additional AI is also coming in: I already see developing a human perception that machines (/automations) do not make mistakes. Accepting malfunctions take more effort than assuming human mistakes. Interesting irrationality. It's interesting, Humane seems to be a touchstone in the whole IoT AI device debate. It's really brought out a bunch of conversations and supporters and detractors. I do think we're on the verge of a "connected everything" world and not just a phone-centric interface to our data; our access to our data will be immersive, contextual, and ubiquitous. We are also entering a "valley of disillusionment" when it comes to AI. The perceived progress has been so fast but the progress is uneven across the various fronts and also not "baked" enough to meet consumer expectations. I am astonished how quickly some aspects of the Star Trek and Minority Report future is arriving but how much time we still really need to get this cake baked. You get these flashes of astonishment, like how well the newest version of Tesla's FSD is working and moments of fear like when that very same system is about to drive you off the road at infrequently random moments and periods of infuriation like when you ask your Google Home to play Billy Joel "and so it goes" and it plays the London children's choir version.

And still it’s the biggest revolution in the way we will interact with machines in the future. I think, Imran‘s intention to design a product that is focusing on humanity by making technology useful, but invisible to allow us to be more present is a full success! 🖤 Is the #Humane #aipin replacing the smartphone? But that isn’t the intention, its idea is to make digital more a seamless part of our world, and in certain instances and contextual moments a screen makes sense and in others it doesn’t. I rate the Ai Pin with ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for what it will do to humanity if it’s functionality and experience will deliver on the concept. Making natural language the new UI. And allow being more focused on our surroundings.
