🚨 As the junior winter sports season kicks off tomorrow, we're urging parents to reconsider how they support their young athletes from the sidelines. Auckland University of Technology researcher, Craig Harrison highlights a concerning trend: overbearing coaching from parents is not only overwhelming but also deprives children of crucial learning opportunities in sports. This pressure can lead to kids quitting sports altogether at a young age. Harnessing the Power of Practice and Self-Belief in Youth Sports In the world of youth sports, the journey to success is often paved with a mix of achievements and setbacks. For young athletes, it's easy to get caught up in the mistakes they make, sometimes overshadowing the progress they’re achieving. However, the wisdom behind the saying, "With practice, the good things you do will outweigh the mistakes," is a valuable lesson that can have a profound impact on a child's development, both on and off the field Practice builds the foundation for skill improvement, while self-belief empowers young athletes to overcome challenges. Encouragement from coaches and parents strengthens these qualities, fostering confidence and resilience in youth sports #YouthSports #PracticeMakesPerfect #SelfBelief #PositiveMindset #RisingStarsDL #YouthAthleteDevelopment #SportsMotivation #CoachingTips #BuildingConfidence #OvercomingChallenges

As a Sports Parent, What's Your Ultimate Goal for Your Kids? Having been in youth sports for a while, I've realized something crucial: it's not about chasing pro status, mastering the perfect technique, or even improving physical condition. Yes, these things matter, but they're not the main game. The true goal? To keep our kids engaged and passionate about sports for as long as possible. Sports teach resilience, discipline, teamwork, and joy, but all that fades if our kids quit too soon. Our role as parents is to nurture that passion, not crush it with pressure or unrealistic expectations. So, ask yourself: Are your actions and behavior today helping your child fall in love with sports? Or are they pushing them further away from it? Let's be intentional. Let's focus on what truly matters. #YouthSports #SportsParenting #ParentShift #KeepKidsInSports #SportsForLife #PositiveParenting #LongTermGoals #MindfulParenting #SportsJourney #NurturePassion #HealthyMindset #SportsDevelopment #ParentingGoals #SupportNotPressure

Really great interview by News 9 talking to Kendra Morgan, CEO of Building All Children. She talks about the importance that youth sports play on a child's development and the characteristics that are learned such as, "things like teamwork, courage, work ethic, and the ability to follow instructions from a coach." “They have to learn both because you're not going to always win and you're not always going to lose. So you have to learn those skills, and sports teaches that.” Check out the piece below! #youthsports #coaching #sports #teaching #rolemodels https://lnkd.in/gGtfMyxR

When your child starts competing for the first time in sport, it can be a challenging time. Eight ideas for all parents to manage the process. 1) Enjoyment Over Winning Encourage your child to enjoy the process of learning and playing the sport. The primary goal should be to have fun, develop skills, and foster a love for the sport. 2) Encourage Self-Reflection After a match, engage in constructive conversations with your child. What do they think went well? What could they improve on? How did they feel during their match? This can help them develop self-awareness and a proactive approach to their development. 3) Provide Unconditional Support Be your child's biggest fan, regardless of the outcome. Unconditional support is crucial for their emotional and psychological well-being. Celebrate their participation and effort, listen to their experiences, and reassure them during tough times. 4) Set Realistic Goals Work to set achievable, short-term goals that are specific and measurable. These goals should focus on skill development, personal bests, or even attitude improvements rather than solely on winning. 5) Practice Positive Communication Use positive language when discussing their performance. Focus on the positives of their performance and how they can learn from every experience. Avoid criticism that doesn't offer a constructive path forward. 6) Encourage Independence Foster a sense of responsibility in your child by involving them in decision-making processes related to their sport, such as setting practice schedules or goals. 7) Manage Stress and Anxiety Teach your child techniques to manage pre-competition nerves or disappointment after a loss. This can include deep breathing or positive self-talk. 8) Foster a Supportive Social Environment Encourage your child to build relationships with peers, coaches, and mentors within their sport. A supportive community can provide additional motivation and foster a sense of belonging. Your role in nurturing a positive, healthy, and supportive environment is key to their success and enjoyment in their sport. #parentingathletes #juniorsport #sportparticipation

Let’s talk about how sports coaches and parents together shape the moral and sports integrity of young athletes. When parents are questioned about the reasons why their child should play sports, a combination of the following responses is often heard: 1. For the child's health, emphasizing the importance of physical activity for maintaining a healthy lifestyle and proper physical development. 2. Due to the influence of the environment in which the child will be involved while participating in sports, highlighting the benefits of integration into a positive sports community, which can provide structure, support, and moral values. 3. Given the possibility that the child may obtain a sports scholarship for studies, parents see sports as a path to education and an opportunity for further academic and sports development. 4. Furthermore, there is an aspiration for the child to one day become a professional athlete, which entails achieving sports goals at the highest level and the possibility of turning sports into a career. However, before these responses are accepted as absolute truth, it is essential to analyze their real applicability and impact. For example, does the sports environment truly provide the support and developmental opportunities mentioned, or are these claims more theoretical than practical? Even dishonest or illusory? I’m interested to hear your thoughts. I will start sharing mine in the upcoming days. #youngathletes #coach #parenr #athleteparent #sportsteam #athletementalhealth #isyourchildready #owntheproblem
