IMPORTANT UPDATE: FREE 2024 Sporting Heritage Online Conference Thursday 9th May – 9.45 am – 3.30 pm Change of conference format: We had planned to run this year's conference as an in-person event at the fantastic Headingly, but we have made the difficult decision to change the format to an online one. This change in format allows us to offer the event as FREE to attend. Changes across the sector: We know how much the sector values getting together in person, but over the past few years, we also acknowledge how resources and capacity to support this has reduced, especially following the impact of COVID-19, which has left a lasting change on how we work and how we consume content. It is clear that an in-person conference, with the ticket, travel, and accommodation costs that this attracts, does not work for a large proportion of the Sporting Heritage community. Existing ticket holders: If you have already bought a ticket to the in-person event, we will be in touch to refund you. All existing ticket holders will be automatically transferred to the online event. Find out more about this year's programme, our sponsors and how to book your FREE place HERE: https://bit.ly/3TAB430. #SportingHeritage24 #SportingEvents #Heritage

Hosting large sporting events, such as Euro 2024 and the Paris Olympics, is often seen as a prestigious opportunity; they carry global recognition and are believed to have a significant contribution to the economy. However, data from previous Olympics suggest a potentially different reality, raising questions about the actual value of hosting such mega-events. So what is the economic cost vs reward when it comes to large scale sporting events? We explore all in our latest article 👉 https://buff.ly/3ASPXI7 #HLBInsights #EconomicImpact #Construction #Infrastructure #Tourism #OlympicGames

The #Paris2024Olympics are just round the corner. I thought I should share some titbits about the Olympics. Today's focus is on the #IOC recommendation for digital interventions... The International Olympic Committee adopted the Olympic Agenda 2020+5 in March, 2021. This Agenda consists of a raft of 15 recommendations which are partly inspired by learnings from previous Olympic cycles and partly from contemporary trends. As an avid follower of multi disciplinary events in the Olympic Games over the years, I vividly recall the different editions based on where I was, who I was watching with, how we dashed to the nearest television to catch the events etc. More on that later... I am therefore particularly curious about how recommendation eight (8) of the Agenda - Grow digital engagement with people - will affect our Olympics experience. Some of the key developments under this recommendation are: 1. Using Olympic digital and social media channels to deliver engagement during and between the Olympic Games. 2. Building a single people-centric digital platform, Olympics.com. There has been a large scale consolidation of Olympic digital properties, technology, content production, marketing communications, data management and the like on this platform. In addition to delivering original content about the Olympics, this platform should enhance digital engagement opportunities and create more personalised user experiences. Only fantasy games have reached the Olympics, people! 3. Integrating the Olympic Channel under https://lnkd.in/dGCCJYC7 to provide a dedicated sports video section and linear channel. Its main purpose is to maintain year-round interest in the Olympic Movement, offering captivating documentaries and other programming chronicling the Olympic Games, as well as coverage of Olympic sports outside the Games. Users can stream live coverage of major sporting events, watch replays, original series and films, and get the latest sports videos on demand. 🌍 As the Paris Olympics unfolds, we’re left wondering: is it worth hosting such grand events when our world is in crisis? 🏟️🔥 Let’s consider repurposing existing venues and accommodations to cut down on waste and environmental impact. Every year, we're promised the "most sustainable Olympics ever," yet the gap between promises and reality remains wide. Here’s hoping Paris can lead the way and prove that we can host world-class events while truly respecting our planet. 🌟🏅 #Paris2024 #SustainableOlympics #EcoFriendlyEvents #ClimateAction #GreenFuture #ResponsibleSport

With the Paris Olympics in full swing, we must ask: are these huge events worth it, while our world is burning? How many stadiums will be built, only to be abandoned the next year? How many venues will be demolished soon after? How many people will fly to watch their favorite athlete compete? The Olympics are great. They bring us all together. But can't we do it greener? For starters, how about using existing venues and accommodation? Year after year, we keep hearing how the next event will be "the most sustainable ever." Yet I feel like there is still a long way to go. . I hope Paris will set a different example than some of these sad examples from previous cities!

Here's a thought - why not have an Olympic Park built (or even one per continent) that is used for multiple Olympiads, hosted by a different country each time. Retain the stadia, lakes, accommodation and facilities which can be used as training facilities in the interim years. This minimizes the cash impact on the host country, provides a reason to maintain the facilities, provides a training facility for others. These facilities could be owned by the Olympic Organisation and generate income for distribution to developing countries for their sports programs. Food for thought?

My thoughts exactly... 😔🌍 I love the Olympics, by what it means and value it carries, and one of my most memorable moments in life was in Athens visiting the origins of it. Yet.. I could not avoid thinking, while watching the inspiring and amazing festivities of the opening ceremony, can't we do it in a more sustainable way? Can't we find other ways to be "together" in sports, arts and cultural events? Is the disparity of resources' use sustainable for how long?... I do not have an answer. Only questions. And mixed feelings. Hopefully someone else better equipped than me, will come up with a solution. 🙏 #sustainability #events #resources #planet
