#FIFA's World Cup 2034 is taking place in #SaudiArabia. The country's only bid is as good as confirmed despite the massive backlash towards FIFA, their host selection process, and the designated host. While recent news has either focused on the expected #design masterpieces (Designboom's link in the first comment) or the feared "corporate manslaughter" (The Guardian's link in the first comment), I want us to consider the #sustainability impact of the world biggest sporting event. Saudi Arabia will host the tournament in 15 new stadiums, of which only 4 already exist. 11 stadiums will be built or completed in less than 10 years. 4 stadiums have to be upgraded in less than 10 years. All 15 stadiums will wow most of the world for a few weeks before they slowly start falling apart year by year because of the lack of the reduce, reuse, recycle, and recover principle. #climateaction #corruption #humanrights Image: muflih alhababi from Pixabay.

First images revealed of world’s largest football stadium planned for Morocco. How sustainable is it to continue to build newer, more modern, larger and 'more beautiful' (football) stadiums worldwide? The discussion surrounding the World Cup in Qatar is well-known. Morocco is also not a football country par excellence. What is wrong with (re)using existing stadiums worldwide? Why do championships have to rotate continuously in terms of locations? Make other international agreements aimed at using existing (and hopefully well-maintained) stadiums worldwide. Participating (selected/placed) countries divide the costs and revenues of a championship. Higher costs for the richer participating countries and lower costs for the less affluent countries. The reverse for the revenues. Our society has been 'functioning' outside the planetary boundaries and sources for quite some time now. A pause seems more than welcome and necessary to me. What do you think? Agree or disagree? #fifa #uefa #football #championchip #stadium #sustainability #sustainable #olympics #games #paris2024 https://lnkd.in/ev8PzU-G

🔴 Did you remember the 974 stadium, the "sustainable" venue that hosted games during the Qatar 2022 World Cup? Built using 974 shipping containers and designed with natural ventilation , it was meant to be dismantled after the 2022 World Cup. The reality is far different because it is still standing in Doha. Instead of becoming a model of sports legacy, this stadium has been left abandoned. It was once suggested that the stadium would be donated to Tunisia after the tournament, but today the situation is quite different. ❌ Not a single match has been played there in the two years since the tournament ended. ❌ It is the only 2022 World Cup stadium not included among those selected for the Asian Cup. A few days ago, FIFA announced that the stadium will finally be reused for the FIFA Confederations Cup in december. But at what cost? Ironically, this stadium was designed to avoid becoming a white elephant. But it has surpassed the traditional concept of abandoned facilities by embodying a unique paradox: it is meticulously maintained but entirely unused… Today, the dismantling plans are ready and they are just waiting for Doha's authorities to make a decision... This reminding us that sustainability is not just about design but also about long-term vision and management. #SportsLegacy #Sustainability #974Stadium #Qatar2022 #SportEvents #InfrastructureManagement #ResponsibleSports
