Paris's iconic bouquinistes have won the battle to stay in place this summer, avoiding displacement due to the Olympics. Despite the win, Parisians in general are voicing concerns over the upcoming event's impact, including traffic and increased surveillance. The debate on the pros and cons of hosting large-scale sporting events like the Olympics continues. While some argue for long-term infrastructure and economic benefits, others point to the high costs, environmental damage, and the disruption to local communities. A recent study suggest that the positive impact on tourism from such events is often offset by the deterrence of regular tourists, leading to a net decrease in visitor numbers in many host countries. The researchers looked at how things have actually turned out for major sporting events around the world between 1995 and 2019. They found that many of the events had the opposite effect on tourism: Those who would normally have come as tourists chose to go elsewhere precisely because of the event. As a result, the host countries received fewer tourists than they had anticipated. The researchers specifically looked at the Winter and Summer Olympics and the FIFA World Cup and their effect on international tourism. They compared data on the number of tourists expected without the events and data on the actual number of tourists who came to the countries that had just hosted. Of the 18 host countries included in the study, 11 experienced a decline in tourism. Three experienced no change. However, four countries saw an increase in tourism. This applied to the FIFA World Cup in Japan and South Korea in 2002, the FIFA World Cup in South Africa in 2010, the Summer Olympics in China in 2008, and the Winter Olympics in Russia in 2014. "Our results show that it's easier to get people to travel to countries that are less common destinations for tourists - for example, in Asia or Africa," Ivan Savin, one of the researchers behind the study, writes in this article.
