Summer hiring slowdown? Nope. While the overall volume of attorney hiring in Florida might be down, I have not seen a slowdown as we enter the summer. What I do see is a slowdown in attorneys considering a lateral move. Many attorneys wait until the fall/winter to consider making a move because it's been programmed into their minds to wait for their year-end bonus before making a move. But when the majority zigs, you need to zag. In the summer, you will have less competition and many firms will match year-end bonuses. If there might be a better opportunity for you, are you really going to let the time of year dictate your happiness? You need to take control of your career, now. Law firms are working at full speed, and hiring can feel like a time drain when you’re wading through hundreds of applications. Especially when most don’t hit the mark. Solution? Get selective right from the start. Define the must-have skills, experiences, and values for the role. Zero in on candidates who are more than just qualified; they’re primed for your firm’s culture. Using skill-matching software and data-driven insights isn’t just efficient—it’s a strategic edge. You’re not just filling a seat; you’re investing in a valuable, lasting fit. Focusing on candidates with the right expertise upfront means you spend less time sorting through mismatches. That’s more time for your team to connect with serious contenders. And those are the hires that stick, thrive, and elevate your firm’s work.

Don’t be afraid to hire people smarter and more talented than yourself. This is another key thing I've learned as I reflect on our journey of growing our law firm from 2 to 50 staff members over the last 9 years. I can’t remember who gave me this nugget of wisdom early on – my apologies, if I could remember I would credit you! But this has been an invaluable piece of advice over the years. Naturally I think we feel threatened by people who know more than we do, or who are smarter than we are. But as the business has grown, surrounding myself with people who are smarter and more talented than myself has been a huge key to our success. This applies to my business partners, our team leaders and lawyers, and our incredibly talented support staff. They all have skills and abilities I don’t have. The really tricky bit is learning to let go; that hasn’t always been easy for someone like myself who likes to control all the little details. But there is also a huge relief in letting go and realising I don’t have to know everything, or be an expert in everything. I don’t have to stress about everything. I have awesome, smart, talented team members to help bridge the gaps for me. How about your team, do you think it's important to hire people smarter than yourself? Let me know ⬇️ If you have found these reflections helpful or at least interesting, hit like 👍 and follow, and I might be convinced to write some more 😊 #hiring #businessgrowth #talent #lawfirm
