On this #NationalDayForTruthAndReconciliation, we remember the victims and honour the survivors of residential schools. We acknowledge the profound impact this system has had on Indigenous Peoples. Today is a moment to learn, reflect and work toward reconciliation. Did you know that in 2023, the share of management positions held by First Nations, Inuit, and Métis slipped to 2.4% from 2.7% a year earlier? This is less than half the Coalition's 5% target for management positions. Building a more inclusive Canada means ensuring that Indigenous Peoples are equal partners at the table in developing better policies. #NDTR #EveryChildMatters

Tonight's property reading is on Community Land Trusts. Understanding how we can meet the housing demand in lots of different ways is important. Not all opportunities are for profit and status. Some help deal with the affordable housing crisis and enable building where other schemes would not be approved or viable. https://lnkd.in/emtBh-ag

As we reflect on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we can honour the survivors of residential schools and remember the children who never returned home. This day challenges us to learn from the past and continue the journey toward healing and justice. At BHP, we are committed to Call to Action #92 and to walking this path with Indigenous communities, guided by respect, partnership, and reciprocity. Our Canada Indigenous Partnerships Plan outlines a positive step forward in working together to create a shared, prosperous future. Reconciliation is ongoing, and it’s up to all of us to listen, learn, and act. #TruthAndReconciliation #NDTR #EconomicReconciliation

The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is intended to honour Survivors, their families, and communities, and ensure that public commemoration of the history and legacy of residential schools remains a vital component of the reconciliation process. Personally, Dr. Piotrowski has found the free course “Indigenous Canada” on Coursera by Tracy Lee Bear & Paul L Gareau to be valuable. While this course does not centre around the impact of residential schools, she found it to be very helpful in understanding what life was like before the arrival of settlers to Turtle Island as well as the early relationship between the indigenous of this land and the settlers. (She particularly enjoyed the video format.) Specifically about Truth and Reconciliation with the Indigenous Peoples of Canada, here are some resources from which you and your family may learn valuable information: Read: Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada reports, including the TRC's Calls to Action, or order a hardcopy booklet. Watch: "Namwayut: We Are All One" CBC Video on Truth and Reconciliation in Canada, narrated by Chief Robert Joseph, a residential school survivor. Watch or listen: How can Canadians work toward reconciliation, an interview with Justice Murray Sinclair, former Chairperson of the TRC. We hope you find some time today to reflect. Participating in Orange Shirt Day or other events within your communities is a great start and we also very much encourage individuals to honour this day through education and awareness activities. #pacificeyedoctors #mapleridge #optometrycanada #truthandreconciliation

What are the 94 Calls to Action? The 94 Calls to Action is a comprehensive document created through the Truth & Reconciliation Commission. This document lists the recommendations for meaningful system changes to policy to prevent a repeated history of the residential school system and to also repair the damage done through colonization of indigenous people in Canada. There are two categories in the 94 Calls to Action; Legacy (1-42) and Reconciliation (43-94). Legacy addresses the atrocities of residential schools and Reconciliation to implement the policy changes as they are created and reinvented.
