🌿 Shoutout to Clara George Netflix’s Virgin River is setting a new standard for sustainable filmmaking! With the leadership of Clara George, Netflix's Regional #Sustainability Advisor for Canada, the production has drastically reduced its reliance on diesel generators, embracing clean energy alternatives like batteries, electric vehicles, and local grid power. ✅ Key Wins on Set: - Batteries replace noisy, polluting generators, creating quieter and cleaner working environments. - Electric vehicles now used for transport, including cargo vans and pickup trucks. - Collaboration with crew members to innovate and integrate eco-friendly technologies season by season. https://zurl.co/XDuVb 🎥 “If you want something done, you get a film person to do it,” George says, highlighting the power of teamwork and creativity in driving #sustainablechange. 🌍 These efforts aren’t just great for the #environment—they’re also creating more pleasant experiences for crews, actors, and local communities. Let’s celebrate the strides towards a greener entertainment industry! 👏 #SustainableFilmmaking #Netflix #VirginRiver #CleanEnergy #EcoFriendlyProductions #sustainableproduction

07.12.24 Welcome back to #FutureFilmFridays, where we explore the intersection of Hollywood and technology, and how these advancements are shaping the future of filmmaking and entertainment. This week, I delve into #climate focused storytelling, a major industry deal, #AI innovations, and multi-sensory marketing. 1. The Hollywood Climate Summit successfully concluded its 5th year — bringing together talent across the entertainment and climate industries. The panel recordings are now available online, and one of my favorites features Dorothy Fortenberry, Roxane Gay, and Rosanna Xia discussing how to envision better futures on screen. This panel, along with the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) short film and the climateonscreen.org initiative (same link), highlights the need for empowering stories about the future and offers resources to creators. Shout out to Daniel Hinerfeld and Meredith Milton for their inspiring work with the Rewrite the Future initiative. 🌍https://lnkd.in/gBaGkJye 2. The biggest news of the week was the official announcement of the Paramount/Skydance deal. Matthew Belloni from Puck interviewed David Ellison, the 40-year-old Skydance President, and it is a must listen interview. It injects some needed optimism into our industry as Ellison seems like a capable and intelligent leader passionate about film, yet tech and business savvy. (h/t Mark Vahradian) 🎬https://lnkd.in/gYqrWVwX As a side note, Ellison mentioned attracting top-tier artists as 'paramount' to the studio's future, which leads me to shout out of Apple TV's 'Presumed Innocent', which just received a 2nd season order. It’s an EXCELLENT piece of television from David E. Kelley but I barely knew about it, the marketing has been abysmal. How do streamers cut through the noise? 3. Catching up on AI news, two stories about AI movie studio launches caught my eye: Odyssey: An AI movie startup launched by former self-driving car engineers, has $9 million in seed funding. 🤖https://lnkd.in/gkuYgqES Dreamflare Studio: An AI entertainment platform co-founded by a former Google exec and a doc filmmaker. 🍿https://lnkd.in/gQH2bvEp 4. As we consider what entertainment will evolve into over the next 5 years, I found this article on multi-sensory brandingthought provoking. How will this extrapolate out into our favorite IP? Will one story become sticky because it connected through a unique sense not traditional to film and tv? 💡https://lnkd.in/gMWMfqgW That’s it for this week. The future is coming fast. See you there.

🌍🎬 We’re thrilled to announce the release of the Greening European Film Policy report! This insightful document delves into #sustainability policies across the European film, television, and streaming sectors at local, state, and EU levels. It serves as a crucial resource for institutionalizing #green🌱practices and addressing policy gaps within the industry. Zsófia Szemerédy and Julia Tordai are incredibly proud to have contributed to this initiative! A huge thank you to everyone involved for your amazing work! Lead Authors: Pietari Kääpä (Warwick) & Hunter Vaughan (Emerson College/Cambridge) Key Recommendations: 1. Minimum Standards: Establish standardised sustainability expectations and norms, from development-stage planning to on-set baselines, for both publicly-financed and commercial productions. 2. Finance Adopt mandatory financial investment schemes for all productions, including incoming mobile productions and international co-productions, to link financial incentives with verifiable reductions in environmental impact. 3. Auditing Introduce third-party auditing and certification focused on exceeding minimum standards, directly tied to financial incentivisation. 📥 Download the report here: https://zurl.co/IlUM Together, let’s pave the way for a sustainable future in film and TV! 🌱✨ #SustainableFilm #GreenPolicy #EuropeanFilm #EcoFriendly #ClimateAction #FilmIndustry #sustainablefilmmaking #climatechange #takeaction

As this article makes clear, the carbon footprint of Film & TV production can be very large. The emissions can be viewed as two distinct types, those required by the creative team to put their vision on screen, and those generated burning fossil fuel for moving people and equipment from place to place and for providing power on set and at base. That second category accounts for the bulk of our emissions, and we have solutions that can significantly reduce these emissions once emissions reduction is given the priority it deserves by senior decision makers at the earliest stages of the pre-production process. When a senior person says "I want this to happen", the rest is easy.

Globally, this really is an issue and the UK is a big contributor (when there’s actually any work!). The industry that needs to set the highest example of sustainability and decarbonisation is actually not covering itself in glory right now. There are some really exciting and simple solutions ready to be launched by a leading supplier to the industry, BTFS (Bristol Television & Film Services) making decarbonisation easier and incentivising the motivation to change, because change is hard.
