I only apply to 1/10 SDR role job ads. Here's why: The SDR role can be a great way to get market insights—but only if it's set up for success. Too often, companies miss the mark entirely. Lack of Role Investment: Companies signal they don't want to pay for quality. They advertise for a junior SDR to 'make calls' with just a phone and an unmanaged CRM/Excel. No strategic support, no preparation—leading to high turnover and minimal success. Application Management Signals: Posting a role on LinkedIn but not reviewing applications within 1-2 days. Delayed responses signal low priority and poor hiring practices. Lack of Trust in Talent: Overly long list of requirements combined with a 7-step recruitment process. Multiple tests that feel excessive rather than supportive. Absence of clarity on tools, methodologies, and role support. Other Red Flags: No mention of alignment with marketing campaigns. No clarity on how prospects are prequalified. Absence of internal access to key tech personnel for market insights. Ignoring the full spectrum of SDR potential: Salesforce data admin, data steward, and phone branding. Imagine a well-supported SDR: access to prequalified leads, clear marketing alignment, and tools to maximize success. That’s the standard I seek. The SDR role, when correctly set up, is a powerful revenue engine. But too often, it's treated as a short-term numbers game. How to Build an Effective SDR Team: Provide structured lists of prequalified accounts. Ensure CRM hygiene and lead accuracy. Equip SDRs with market knowledge, not just a pitch script. Involve marketing directly in lead generation. Trust the talent you hire and reduce unnecessary hiring barriers. Leverage SDRs beyond calling: Salesforce data admin, data stewardship, and branding through the phone experience. Serious about building an effective SDR team? Respect the intelligence of your hires. Give them the right tools and a supportive ecosystem. I think Personalization is a waste of time. Try this next time, Instead: Start by identifying your ICP - Title - Location - Revenue - Company Size Next add something like: - Tech stack (HubSpot or SAP) - Job changes (increase in department size) - Hiring (posted open roles) Now you have a targeted list you can use for your outreach, leveraging something the entire list has in common. Example of what I would do next: Let’s say you’re targeting your ICP (who also uses HubSpot). I would send a message like this: “I might have missed the mark here - but I helped increased a similar company on HubSpot speed-to-lead by +300% and meeting conversion rate by 17% - simply by adding SMS to their inbound funnel. [I would highly suggest reading a book “Hiring for attitude” if you are looking into growing your career!] ⭐️ Proactivity - presenting practical first steps they’d take to drive growth, and not asking straight away what is the budget for Google ads… What skills do you look for when hiring?
