75% of Children with Special needs in India remain excluded from mainstream education. How do we build inclusive education systems where every child can say "I am Seen, I am Heard, I am Understood, I am Accepted?" While many states are making good progress in FLN, not taking a inclusion lens means that these children are increasingly left behind. Neutral is just not enough. Dalberg and Sol's ARC are excited to launch a playbook on ‘Making Foundational Literacy and Numeracy Inclusive for Children with Special Needs’. This playbook has been one of the most rewarding pieces to shape and launch this year. It highlights the scale and significance of the problem, the need to design for every learner (not just the average learner), and tangible ways for the ecosystem to take this on. Efforts start with ensuring that every child is screened regularly for every disability, budgets are allocated and utilized towards building adaptive curriculum and assessments, teachers are trained on inclusive classroom practices, and finally, broader community level awareness is prioritized to break the stigma attached to this. This is not just a compendium of ideas, but a call to action for the ecosystem. Through the playbook, we hope to spark deeper conversations – for states to show intent in building inclusive systems, for funders to embed inclusion as a fundamental lens and advocate for a system level adoption of the same, and for the civil society to lead this change on-ground. How do we build inclusive education systems where every child can say "I am Seen, I am Heard, I am Understood, I am Accepted?" While many states are making good progress in FLN, not taking an inclusion lens means that these children are increasingly left behind. It's time that inclusion does not become a niche area but a mainstream priority. This playbook emphasizes the importance of catering to each learner's needs rather than focusing solely on the average. It suggests starting with universal disability screenings and strategically allocating budgets for adaptable learning materials. It also stresses on teacher training in inclusive methods and the importance of raising community awareness to combat stigma. This playbook is more than just a compilation of ideas; it's a call to action. It seeks to ignite conversations that compel states to prioritize inclusive systems, encourage funders to integrate inclusion as a core principle, and empower civil society to lead grassroots change. . . . . 🚀 Exciting News! 🚀 We are thrilled to announce that ChangeInkk has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with NIEPID Secunderabad on July 22, 2024. NIEPID is an autonomous body under the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, GOI. This partnership will help us in achieving our mission of unlocking the potential of 200 million individuals with SLDs. The MoU was signed in New Delhi under the presence of Honourable Union Minister, Shri Dr. Virendra Kumar. This collaboration marks a significant milestone in our mission to increase the identification and screening of individuals with Specific Learning Disabilities (SLDs) across India, encompassing both children and adults. The seed of this initiative was borne during the Purple Talk Series, an initiative by Secretary DePwD, Shri Rajesh Aggarwal sir aimed at bringing together startups, educational institutions, organisations, and leading practitioners from both government and private sectors to drive advancements for individuals with disabilities. This MoU is a significant step forward in providing technological support for screening children and adults with learning disabilities—a critical gap in India's current system. Key gaps we aim to address through our collaboration: - Lack of Diagnosis: We aim to bridge the gap in diagnosis by providing comprehensive screening tools. - Adult Screening: Developing and implementing screening tools for adults, expanding beyond the current limit of age 14. - Language Barriers: Ensuring the screening tools are available in local Indian languages, making them accessible to all. - Strength Mapping: Enhancing current tools to map strengths as well as deficits, providing a more holistic assessment.
