Last weekend, I visited my Alma Mater, Davidson College - recently ranked top 10 best college in the nation by The Wall Street Journal, Go Cats! As an alumni board volunteer, I had the awesome opportunity to meet with student leaders at the school. My aha? We, as alumni, are seen as beacons and torchbearers! Students seek our experiences so that our paths & accomplishments can serve as inspiration. This means as an alumni community, we have a responsibility and an opportunity to support students in achieving their full potential- woah. During our session, three key themes emerged: - The importance of providing vast visibility into alumni paths toward success. - The need for regional alumni presence during student showcases. - Access to insights on how previous student groups were managed, enabling current students to learn from both successes and challenges. Call to action?! Davidson alumni, get ready to be tapped and asked to plug in! Also, any international students who were able to successfully source internships to remain in the US post-graduation, please DM me. Your guidance is requested! -- Left to right: @Christopher Anosike, Mikayla Bowens, Danielle Dory Hyppolite, Brianna Burton, Rayna McKenzie, Stacy Miruka, Kasha Salia, Chris Burton, D.Min., Jalyssa Hobbs, @Daniel Thomas, Arielle Germeus. 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐞'𝐬 𝐚 𝐆𝐚𝐦𝐞-𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐧 𝐄𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐜𝐞 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭: In a world where the pace of change is relentless, the true currency of economic development is no longer just about the workforce; it's about the skills that each individual brings to the table. And I'm not just talking about any skills but about 𝒅𝒖𝒓𝒂𝒃𝒍𝒆 𝒔𝒌𝒊𝒍𝒍𝒔. These are the skills that stand the test of time: adaptability, collaboration, critical thinking, and empathy, to name a few. Recently, I was inspired by how North Carolina is pioneering a transformative approach to education by introducing the "Portrait of a Graduate" by the Department of Public Instruction (DPI). This visionary initiative, developed by Battelle for Kids, is not just a program; it's a movement towards ensuring our students are not just academically proficient but are also equipped with the soft skills that are increasingly becoming the linchpin for success in today's and tomorrow's job markets. I'm particularly impressed by North Carolina's proactive approach in integrating durable skills such as adaptability, collaboration, and empathy into education from an early stage. This aligns closely with the critical skills we value in the business world. The collaboration between North Carolina's DPI, businesses, and educational sectors is setting a new standard for educational excellence and workforce preparedness, urging us to prioritize the comprehensive growth of our future leaders. As someone deeply invested in the intersection of education and workforce development, I see this as a pivotal moment. It's about time we all start thinking about contributing to and supporting such initiatives, whether by partnering with educational institutions, providing internships, or simply being part of the conversation. #EducationReform #DurableSkills #WorkforceDevelopment #FutureOfWork

For the Spring 2024 semester, CPF POSC 395 Policy Research Internship students explored how eminent domain affected communities in south Los Angeles, especially Black communities within California’s 37th Congressional district. Students examined its impacts on land ownership, generational wealth, and community prosperity. They presented their extensive research and recommendations to our partner, Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove. Sofia Connors, a sophomore majoring in Political Science, said, "I was grateful to take part in the POSC 395 Policy Research Internship. I learned about the ways the government has historically used eminent domain to target minority communities in Los Angeles, segregating them and gentrifying their communities. This internship taught me about the foundations Los Angeles was built upon, that many fail to acknowledge. It is rewarding to know we could be making an impact on policy, potentially getting reparations for the countless Black families displaced by eminent domain and had their homes taken." A huge shout out to Sofia Connors, Sydney Crowley, Christian Haro, Juan Herdoiza, and Bright Lee for your outstanding work on this project! 🔍 Why Researching College Faculty is Key to Finding the Right Fit 🔍 When building a college list, it's easy to focus on rankings, campus life, or location—but one of the most critical aspects to research is faculty. Professors aren’t just teaching classes—they're conducting research, publishing papers, and contributing to their fields. Understanding their work can tell you a lot about what you'll experience academically at a particular school. Here are a few reasons why faculty research should be part of your college search: 📚 Understand Your Major: Look beyond just the major. Dive into the curriculum, the classes offered, and what it really means to study [insert your major] at that institution. 💡 Research Opportunities: Faculty research can give you insight into potential opportunities for internships or hands-on research experiences. 🎓 Find the Right Fit: Faculty backgrounds can be surprising! You may find world-class professors at smaller or lesser-known colleges, offering you a top-notch education without the Ivy League label. Take the time to explore the academic department and the professors you'll be learning from. The more you know, the better you can tailor your applications and ensure the right academic fit for your college journey!
