Opa Kopjes: ,,Vroegah was alles betah. 🤓 How the designer of the first hydrogen bomb got the gig | IEEE Spectrum By any measure, Richard Garwin is one of the most decorated and successful engineers of the 20th century. The IEEE Life Fellow has won the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the National Medal of Science, France’s La Grande Médaille de l’Académie des Sciences, and is one of just a handful of people elected to all three U.S. National Academies: Engineering, Science, and Medicine. At IBM, where he worked from 1952 to 1993, Garwin was a key contributor or a facilitator on some of the most important products and breakthroughs of his era, including magnetic resonance imaging, touchscreen monitors, laser printers, and the Cooley-Tukey fast Fourier transform algorithm. And all that was after he did the thing for which he is most famous. At age 23 and at the behest of Edward Teller, Garwin designed the very first working hydrogen bomb, which was referred to as “the Sausage.” It was detonated in a test code-named Ivy Mike at Enewetak Atoll in November 1952, yielding 10.4 megatons of TNT. (The largest detonation before Ivy Mike was of a bomb code-named George, which yielded a mere 225 kilotons.) https://lnkd.in/eZe9qSgY #Hbomb #hydrogen #bomb #design #engineering #sausage #IvyMike #gig #economy #RichardGarwin #American #science #hero #nuclear #thermonuclear #era

A few months ago, a new strategy for the EKTL was approved, which focuses on strengthening the organisation's position in international markets, promoting innovation and expanding cooperation at both national and international level. It includes new initiatives to support the growth and competitiveness of member companies. We asked five members of the EKTL to share the strategy's key messages, visions and general insights into the defence industry from the perspective of their own companies. Taavi Veskimägi, Chairman of the EKTL Council, Kuldar Väärsi (Milrem Robotics), Jaanus Tamm (DefSecIntel Solutions), Jüri Etverk (Go Craft), Jaan Viru (Crystalspace) and Ingvar Pärnamäe (Vegvisir) share their views on the defence industry. #ektl #defenceindustry #strategy

Just a few days left until the IEEE Intelligent Vehicles Symposium in Jeju, Korea (2-5 June)! I'm thrilled to share that I will present my work on the impact of connected and automated vehicles on transport injustices. I am looking forward to engaging in discussions and insightful exchanges! Connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) could revolutionise transport, but their impact on justice and safety for vulnerable road users, such as pedestrians or cyclists, remains uncertain. This study explores drivers' and pedestrians' perceptions of these issues, highlighting concerns that CAVs might exacerbate safety disparities and marginalise vulnerable groups. Participants stressed the need for a thorough evaluation, regulatory oversight, and inclusive discussions to ensure a justice-oriented approach to CAV deployment. Thanks to my supervisory team, Andry Rakotonirainy, Deanna Grant-Smith, and Oscar Oviedo-Trespalacios, for their support. BTF lab launches NearLink RF consistency pre-test service SparkLink is a new type of wireless short-range communication technology. It breaks through the technical pain points of traditional wireless short-range technologies, such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. It shows superior performance indicators such as ultra-low latency, high reliability, high synchronisation, and anti-interference. It can carry data interaction in application scenarios in the fields of smart cars, smart homes, smart terminals, and smart manufacturing, and provide consumers with a more friendly user experience. The SparkLink wireless communication system consists of three parts: the SparkLink access layer, the basic service layer, and the basic application layer. Considering that business scenarios have differentiated transmission requirements for wireless short-range communications, the SparkLink access layer currently provides two communication interfaces for the SparkLink upper layer: SparkLink Basic (SLB) and SparkLink Low Energy (SLE); SLE meets the requirements of low-power lightweight connections, and can support 12Mbps data transmission, two-way interaction with a latency as low as 250 microseconds, receiver sensitivity as low as -110dBm, and concurrent access for up to 256 users. Zhongke Haina pushes boundaries: 180Wh/kg+ cylindrical sodium battery breaks energy density ceiling Key points: Zhongke Haina unveils a cylindrical sodium-ion battery exceeding 180Wh/kg, a major breakthrough in energy density. This marks a significant step in addressing a key limitation of sodium batteries, potentially boosting their competitiveness. Cylindrical design offers advantages like high density, fast charging, and good heat dissipation compared to square/soft packs. While square batteries are popular for reliability and ease of expansion, the debate for the optimal form factor will likely continue. Significance: This development signals progress in overcoming the energy density hurdle, a critical factor for wider sodium-ion battery adoption. Improved performance could enhance sodium batteries' appeal in applications like electric vehicles. The competition between cylindrical and square battery designs in the sodium-ion space is poised to intensify. Overall, Zhongke Haina's achievement represents a significant milestone in unlocking the full potential of sodium-ion batteries. Link: https://lnkd.in/ge29UNdD
