As Evelyn Van Orden points out, the "Move Fast and Break Things" philosophy of so many tech companies is fought with issues. Two phrases opposing the "Move Fast and Break Things" mentality come to my mind: First: "Slow is Fast" The phrase "slow is fast" is a shortened version of "slow is smooth, and smooth is fast." The phrase is used by the military (e.g., US Navy SEALS) and law enforcement (e.g., police SWAT) but originating in Roman times (e.g. 'Festina lente' meaning “make haste slowly” or "more haste, less speed"). Rushing jobs leads to mistakes, while taking time to do things carefully and methodically - without hesitation - leads to better outcomes. Recall the May 2024 release of Bard giving ridiculous replies, i.e., US President James Madison graduated from the University of Wisconsin 21 times. To thicken pizza sauce, add white glue, etc. There was speculation that Google rushed Bard's release in an attempt to compete with OpenAI's release of ChatGPT-4o. https://lnkd.in/eGXPgt6c Second: “Brakes are the key to speed” The phrase “Brakes are the key to speed” is taught in auto and motorcycle racing to emphasize the importance of effective braking. When braking efficiently and at the right moments, a driver can maintain better control of the vehicle, navigate corners more smoothly, and thus achieve faster lap times. When deploying genAI, slow is fast and brakes are speed - The "right pace for the right race" indeed!
Facebook's motto was ... "Move fast and break things" The Era of “Move Fast and Break Things” Is Over https://lnkd.in/gPTN7dJ6 Here's my new motto ... 🔹 Move slow and build things 🔹 Thoughts❓ ————— Picture: Move fast and break things, or ... Move slow and make things https://lnkd.in/gYRBz5mY

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗿𝗮 𝗼𝗳 "𝗠𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗙𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀" 𝗜𝘀 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿 Recent events have highlighted the potential pitfalls of the tech industry's long-standing "move fast and break things" philosophy: • Crowdstrike's software deployment taking down much of the world's technology for a day • McDonald's reversing course on their Generative AI drive-thru experiment For years, many innovators lived by Mark Zuckerberg's famous motto. We rushed to market, prioritizing speed over careful consideration of governance and potential consequences. But is this approach still tenable in today's world? The technologies of tomorrow - blockchain, AR/VR, metaverse - will impact our lives more profoundly than ever before. As the public grows increasingly wary of perceived abuses by Big Tech, will we see a shift towards businesses that prioritize addressing economic, social, and environmental problems? Are we witnessing the end of "minimum viable products" and the rise of "minimum virtuous products" - offerings that consider stakeholder effects and build in safeguards against potential harms? Only time will tell. #innovation #responsibleinnovation #future
