On #WorldAspergillosisDay, we want to raise awareness around severe diseases triggered by Aspergillus fungi and pay tribute to our portfolio company Pulmocide, Phase 3 Biopharma developing breakthrough innovation for patients with Invasive Pulmonary Aspergillosis, respiratory life threatening disease. Daily exposure to aspergillus rarely poses a problem for people with robust immune systems. When mold spores are inhaled, immune system cells surround and destroy them. However, people who have a weakened immune system from illness have fewer infection-fighting cells. This allows aspergillus to take hold, invading the lungs and, in the most serious cases, other parts of the body. According to latest estimates published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases (https://lnkd.in/eYkUffAx), over 1.8 million new cases of chronic pulmonary aspergillosis occur each year. Today is International Celiac Disease Awareness Day. Celiac disease is a genetic autoimmune disorder affecting 3 million Americans and 1 in 100 people worldwide. It is estimated that 60-70% of Americans with celiac disease remain undiagnosed. For people with celiac disease, eating gluten (a protein found in wheat, rye, and barley) causes the immune system to create antibodies that attack the small intestine. There is no medication or cure for celiac disease – the only treatment to avoid intestinal damage is a lifelong, strict gluten-free diet. However, studies show that 30-50% of people on a gluten-free diet continue to experience symptoms, revealing the ineffectiveness of the gluten-free diet as a treatment. Visit celiac.org to discover more about Celiac Disease and how you can help spread awareness. #Together4Celiac #CeliacDiseaseAwarenessDay #CeliacDisease
