Manufacturing vehicles using recycled aluminum, not only can significantly reduce emissions but also offers economic dividends on the back end. A report predicts that the aluminum auto body sheet (ABS) scrap generated from North America's best-selling aluminum-intensive vehicles could *double* by 2026 compared to 2021 levels, as these vehicles begin to reach their end of life in the next two years. Automotive recycling is the process of dismantling and reusing parts and materials from end-of-life vehicles (ELVs). This practice plays a crucial role in promoting sustainability and reducing environmental impact. Approximately 85% of a vehicle's materials can be recycled, including metals, plastics, glass, and rubber. The process begins with the safe removal of hazardous fluids and components, followed by the extraction of reusable parts like engines, transmissions, and batteries. The remaining metal body is then shredded and separated into ferrous and non-ferrous metals for further recycling. The #FlexCrash project uses green aluminium alloys and lightweight materials proposing processes more respectful for the planet and leading to a more sustainable #automotive sector. 𝗩𝗼𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗠𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗱𝗲𝘀-𝗕𝗲𝗻𝘇 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝗦𝗥 #Voestalpine announced the launch of a joint project with #Mercedes-Benz and #TSR Recycling to produce green steel for the automotive industry using high-quality scrap. The primary objective of the project is to ensure the technical feasibility of using old #scrap in the production of high-quality steel. Despite the increasing demand for #recycled materials leading to supply shortages, the European steel industry is not slowing down in its transition to green steel production. Therefore, a greater reliance on old scraps is expected in the future. Voestalpine CEO Herbert Eibensteiner highlighted the importance of the green steel project by stating, "Voestalpine has been successfully working for decades to close production cycles in order to conserve resources and ensure raw material supplies. This unique collaboration with Mercedes-Benz and TSR Recycling offers us more opportunities and potential in the circular economy, and is another significant piece in the #greensteel production puzzle." The company plans to replace two #blastfurnaces in Linz and Donawitz with electric arc furnaces (#EAF) starting from 2027 as part of its greentec steel initiatives.  Voestalpine Management Board Member and Head of the Steel Division, Hubert Zajicek, commented on the topic, "Scrap is thus a valuable raw material and plays a key role in the transition to green steel production." https://lnkd.in/ddNHi44R

The Automotive Recyclers Association published a battery use hierarchy in partnership with Argonne National Laboratory The goal is to encourage and incentivize the reuse, reconditioning, remanufacturing and repurposing of batteries. The hierarchy shows the preferred path for batteries after they have served their initial purpose, from the most preferred outcome to the least preferred—represents a retention of the greatest value and energy already invested in the original battery.
