𝗘𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗢𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗚𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗖𝗵𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 As a parent of teenagers, I like to remind my kids to "𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀” as they become more independent. It is a quote I hope will guide them when faced with peer pressure or when they now must stand on their own two feet. I am hopeful they will hear my voice in their subconscious in these pivotal moments. But this raises questions: Am I ready to let go of what I think is best and trust them to navigate their own paths? My son recently went out to brunch for the first time with his buddy, using my credit card, and sent me this wonderful photo of an ice cream sundae he decided was a good choice. Maybe I should be saying “𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘪𝘤𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘯 𝘥𝘢𝘥 𝘥𝘪𝘥 𝘢𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘢𝘨𝘦” Do you agree with me that leadership—and parenting—isn’t about making others follow in our footsteps, but helping them make strides we never did? If our team members grow to make smarter, bolder choices than we would have, isn’t that the greatest testament to effective leadership? 𝘿𝙤 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙝𝙖𝙫𝙚 𝙖 𝙥𝙞𝙚𝙘𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙖𝙙𝙫𝙞𝙘𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙘𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙 𝙨𝙝𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙪𝙨? I still can’t wrap my mind around this when I rewatch it over and over. How is it possible? What an incredible illustration! It perfectly captures the selfless love of a mother for her children. Of course, this does not diminish the important role that fathers play in a child's life as leaders and inspirers who will do anything for their children. As we reflect on this powerful image, it begs the question: what would you do for your people if you are a leader looking to inspire and empower those around you? The answer is simple yet profound: you would do whatever it takes to support, uplift, and encourage those under your leadership. Just like a mother or father sacrifices their own needs and desires for the sake of their children, a true leader who has the desire and heart to make things happen, will put the needs of their team above their own. They will inspire, motivate, and guide their people towards success, always seeking to bring out the best in each individual. So I challenge would be that, as a leader or aspiring leader, to think about the ways in which you can emulate the love and dedication of a mother in your life. Can we all strive to be bold, courageous, and mindful leaders who seek to save lives and make a positive impact on our communities? Birthdays have always been my favorite time to set goals and reflect. Recently I entered a new decade and it's been a wild ride, but here are my top 7 lessons from my 30's. 1) No support system will be as powerful as a close circle of long-term friends who aren't afraid to tell you the truth. 2) You will never evolve without getting out of your comfort zone. 3) Asking for help is a leadership skill. 4) Nothing will eat your time more than anxiety or people pleasing. 5) All of your decisions don't have to be "loved" in order for them to be respected. 6) Identifying what makes you proud of yourself without acknowledgment from others is key to happiness. 7) You have to take time to get to know people who are different from you and LISTEN if you want to build your perspective. #coaching #leadershipdevelopment #inclusion #selfawareness

Yesterday, a story about love reminded me that life's best moments often show up on their own timeline, not ours. As a planner...that's not always easy for me to sit with.   But this story was a powerful reminder as it hit me right in the heart. My kids' preschool teacher (whom we all adored)... now in her early 30s, yesterday got engaged to the first boy she ever loved. They were 12 when they met. They went their separate ways multiple times... In high school, then again in college, and for years after. They both continued along life's journey with no contact, doing their own thing and living their lives separately… until 2019, when they reconnected yet again. 5 years later, they are sealing the deal on their soulmate contract. In both life and work, we can’t force what’s meant to unfold. When we focus on growth and what fulfills us, the best things often arrive when we’re truly ready to embrace them. Parenting is an incredible way to learn about leadership. The daily ups and downs of raising my kids have given me a one-of-a-kind chance to develop key leadership skills in real-life situations. I’m not saying to treat your team like family, but for me, leadership is a lot like parenting… it requires empathy, patience, and understanding. Here’s how this concept has influenced my role. ➖ Be kind Engage with your team on a personal level – everyone has unique strengths, so focus on these rather than weaknesses or unrealistic expectations. ➖ Embrace mistakes They’re actually long-term investments. Like kids, employees grow by understanding consequences - you only do things right by knowing the consequences of doing things wrong. ➖ Learn from the younger generation. They bring fresh insights and know the latest trends. ➖ Be human Treat your team as individuals, not numbers – if they struggle, offer support rather than ultimatums. Ask how you can help. ➖ Speak their language Communicate in terms they understand, just as you would with a child. ➖ Be available Kids need time and attention, and so do your colleagues – be there for them. ➖ Lead by example Your team will respect and follow you – like kids do. Parenting has really shaped how I lead and make decisions every day, and I’m thankful for everything Alisah and Alyaan have taught me. P.S. Gosh! It's hard to believe my youngest is almost 12. Parenting has been a remarkable journey that has significantly influenced my professional growth. The experiences, both good and challenging, have shaped how I approach situations professionally. I've learned the importance of truly listening to others, making them feel seen, heard, and understood. At the same time, I've developed the ability to navigate difficult situations and ask the right questions to help others uncover solutions. Kindness to self ... is a theme that's come up countless times in coaching sessions this week. As leaders we can be kind to others ... we may even have KPIs for that … but how kind are we to ourselves? The conversations I've had this week have been illuminating and alarming. It seems as #highachievers we’re willing to cut ourselves down within a millisecond if we feel we’ve done something wrong, not achieved our goals or disappointed someone. Words like “worthless”, “I don’t deserve to be here”, “not good enough” or “stupid” came from the mouths of women with multiple degrees and serious leadership roles. These are the words we say to ourselves that we’d never dare say to others. These words are the things that burn energy and exhaust us. They can become habitual and debilitating ... and leave no room for us to expand and grow ... let alone role-model for the young women in our lives. We have KPIs to measure what's important in business. What if we had KPIs for kindness to ourselves? How would that shift the game? What sort of energy would that free up to allow ourselves to be our creative best as leaders? What would that extra energy mean for the teams we lead and people we support? How would it shift the game as we role model leadership for our sisters, daughters and young women around us? One of my strategies for my clients? Set yourself a #SelfKindnessKPI of 5 minutes per day of doing something pleasurable just for you. I’d love to hear your views in the comments. You don’t have kids to be thanked—you have kids to love and give selflessly. Which has been a huge lesson for me in being a good Christian. ✨Little Eyes are watching & so are big ones 👀✨ Yesterday, my friend video-called to catch up, and we ended up laughing about her latest parenting struggles. 🤣 She's a first-time parent, and her little one's tantrums and constant "why?" questions have her wondering if she's going crazy! 🤷♀️ But seriously, our conversation hit me - leadership and parenting have way more in common than we think! 🤯 😂 Her kid always argues with her, and it always comes down to one thing: "But you do it, why can't I?" or "You don't do it, why do I have to?" 🤷♀️ Just like our kids, our team members are more likely to follow our example than our instructions. 💡 So, if we want them to be productive, we need to model productivity ourselves. If we want them to be punctual, we need to show up on time. If we want them to take ownership, we need to demonstrate it ourselves. This got me thinking - the aim of both parenting and leadership is more or less the same. 🤝 We want to train our team to make them independent of us, so they can do everything we can do, and much more. And isn't that the same for parenting too? We want our kids to grow up and become independent, capable individuals who can achieve their dreams💕 So, is parenting a leadership role? How much thought do you put into your circle of influence? It's a topic that’s been on my mind recently, especially when it comes to the impact it has on decision-making. I've started to look closer at my circle—who's in it and who should be. Are the people around me pushing me forward or holding me back? The same goes for our kids. Are they surrounded by peers who lead them into trouble, or are there positive influences in their lives? It's not just about the kids, though; sometimes, the parents or other family members can impact them in ways we don’t always see right away.
