As part of my company's (Cotton Education Services) learning design for UTS's Graduate Research School, I've been delivering a series of events for their graduate research students - Happy Fridays. The events feel simple enough when they happen: a group of Higher Degree Research students come together 6 times a year for light nibbles, a couple of drinks and lots of chatting. It feels like a social event, which it is, but there's so much more to the design. GRS has a strong focus on student wellbeing. All of the training program it runs starts from the basic question: "Does this help a graduate researcher thrive?" That is, are we helping the students in their moments of anxiety and crisis with the information, techniques, strategies and experiences they need to become successful researchers? Happy Friday is a wellbeing event - it's important for graduate researchers to come together and take a couple of hours off to rejuvenate, connect with other humans and enjoy a snack. Chess and board games come out. Hawaiian shirts are donned. Instagram pics are taken. But it's also a communication training event. When our graduate researchers come together, they're practicing talking about their research with both people from similar disciplines and lay-people, networking with strangers, and maybe even pitching ideas to collaborate. They're also providing help to each other (with tips on how to submit for grants, put in ethics applications, make their way around a conference, or even how to apply for internships or jobs all being discussed). Researching can be a very isolating experience, so having the courage to step into a room full of strangers and seek out interaction is something I admire in everyone who attends for the first time - and part of the event team's work is to try and connect 'newbies' to Happy Friday with other HDR students. The team will flit around the room making sure that no one is alone, and while we're chatting to students we're checking on their wellbeing and connecting them to training, resources and people that might help ease the steepness of their learning curve. And, sure, sometimes people just talk about their current fav streaming series, but downtime is also important. ("Land of Women" on Apple TV is my current tip). We've seen participation boom from 20 people per event to 150+. For each session we've innovated to try and get it right, and this next Friday we're adding in GRS alumni and UTS staff to the mix for an even more valuable networking opportunity. It's been a pleasure to been involved in developing UTS's GRS community. If your organisation is looking to develop similar wellbeing and active learning events, don't hesitate to get in contact. These types of learning events are often more affordable than expected, particularly when the vibrant outcomes are considered.
Celebrate with GRS for our final Happy Friday of the year! HDR Students, GRS alumni and our community are invited to join us for an end of year networking session. Friday, 29 November, 4-6pm Bookings absolutely necessary because it's catered! Current student book here: https://lnkd.in/gBgFJY2r,; Alumni and UTS staff book here: https://lnkd.in/gffAaM9S.

Celebrating Milestones in Education History on October 10 October 10 marks an important day for reflecting on significant milestones in the history of education, commemorating events and achievements that have shaped the way we learn today. This date serves as a reminder of the evolution and progress in education systems worldwide. One of the notable milestones celebrated on this day is the establishment of the University of Paris, which was one of the first universities in Europe, founded in the mid-12th century. Known for its influence during the Middle Ages, it set the precedent for higher education institutions and helped define academia as we know it today. Another significant event remembered on October 10 is the foundation of the first public school in the United States, the Boston Latin School, in 1635. As the oldest public school in America, it laid the groundwork for public education systems, emphasizing the importance of accessible education for all children, regardless of their social or economic background. In more recent history, October 10 also commemorates the progress made in educational technology. For instance, the introduction of the personal computer in the classroom during the late 20th century revolutionized teaching and learning methodologies, making education more interactive and widely accessible. This technological advancement has paved the way for the digital learning environments we see today. The day also serves to recognize the contributions of educators and reformers who have championed educational equity and innovation. Figures like Maria Montessori and John Dewey have been instrumental in promoting child-centered education and experiential learning, principles that continue to influence modern educational practices. Overall, October 10 stands as a day to honor the ongoing journey of education through history, acknowledging past achievements while inspiring continued growth and improvement in learning around the world. #EducationMilestones #UniversityOfParis #BostonLatinSchool #EducationalTechnology #MontessoriDewey #October10Education

Celebrating Historical Milestones in Education on October 14 October 14 marks several significant milestones in the history of education. Throughout the years, this date has witnessed pivotal moments that have shaped the educational landscape globally. From the establishment of influential educational institutions to groundbreaking educational reforms, these milestones serve as reminders of the progress made in the pursuit of knowledge. One notable event that took place on October 14 is the founding of the University of Copenhagen in 1479. As one of the oldest universities in Northern Europe, it has been a center for learning and research, contributing significantly to the academic and cultural development of Denmark and beyond. The university has produced numerous scholars and Nobel laureates, driven by its commitment to excellence in education and research. Another significant milestone is the introduction of the Education Act of 1870 in England, also known as the Forster Act, which came into effect on October 14. This act laid the foundation for compulsory education for children between the ages of 5 and 13, marking a major step forward in making education accessible to all children, regardless of their social background. It was a key moment in addressing educational inequality and ensuring that every child had the right to learn. In more recent history, October 14 has also been a day for launching initiatives aimed at promoting education in developing countries. For instance, the Global Partnership for Education was established on this date to improve education outcomes in the world's poorest countries. By focusing on building strong education systems, it aims to reduce educational disparities and empower children with the skills needed for a better future. These milestones highlight the importance of October 14 as a day of reflection on the strides made in education and a reminder of the ongoing efforts needed to ensure equitable access to quality education for all. As we celebrate these historical events, it serves as a call to action to continue advocating for educational reforms and innovations that will benefit future generations. #milestonesineducationhistory #educationhistory #UniversityOfCopenhagen #ForsterAct1870 #EducationForAll #GlobalEducationPartnership #HistoricEducationReforms #EquitableEducationForAll
