🕊️ Let’s take a moment to remember the seniors in our lives and in our communities, especially those in senior living facilities. A small visit or a shared activity can mean the world to them - just a few minutes of your time can create joy and connection that lasts far longer. My team and I are gearing up for a trip to a local senior living home to spend quality time with some of these incredible people. We’re bringing along a fun craft to do together, but more than that, we’re bringing smiles, conversations, and open hearts. If you have a little time to give, consider visiting or volunteering at a nearby facility. It’s a gift for them - and for you. 💙 #RememberOurSeniors #GiveBack #CommunityConnections #EstatePlanning #CharlotteEstatePlanning #WillsandTrusts #ProbateLaw #EstateLawyer #CharlotteLawFirm #FinancialPlanning #AssetProtection #EstateAttorney #LegacyPlanning #CharlotteLaw #EstatePlan #WealthManagement #InheritancePlanning #CharlotteAttorney #ElderLaw #CharlotteBusiness #estatepreparation

🌟 Community Resilience in the Face of Challenges 🌟 As we reflect on the current statistics surrounding Hilton Milton, it's clear that our community is facing significant challenges. Recent data highlights a concerning rise in local needs due to economic shifts, impacting many families and individuals. The expected damage in terms of resources and support systems is substantial, emphasizing the urgency for collective action. Yesterday, I attended DocTalks at St. Joseph's Health Care, where Dr. Cheryl Forchuk delivered a speech on mental health and the systemic challenges faced by individuals dealing with homelessness and poverty. This topic is close for me, especially now that I volunteer with 519 Pursuit and witness these issues firsthand. Here are the key points that struck me. Did you know that: 1. Canada is the only industrialized nation without housing at the national level? 2. Approximately 2000 people in London are homeless, with 600 of them living without shelter over a year? 3. Homeless individuals are 70-90 times more likely to suffer from dementia, showing the urgent need for support and systemic change? 4. Government funding such as ODSP, OW, and OAS, provided to our friends on the street, is not enough for them to afford housing? I liked Dr. Forchuk’s analogy using musical chairs to illustrate systemic challenges: if chairs represent affordable housing and people circling them represent homeless individuals, to solve this issue we need to increase the number of chairs and reduce the number of circling people. There is a road System’s failure. Dr. Cheryl Forchuk insights have inspired a stronger call to action in me. Collaborating among community organizations, volunteering time, and building connections with Friends on the street are essential steps toward driving change. Let's unite to create meaningful change. Every action matters. 💪 #MentalHealthAwareness #EndHomelessness #CommunitySupport

Rallying for VOCA Funding at California's State Capitol May 30, 2024 As a social worker, certified sexual assault counselor, and advocate for survivors of sexual violence, human trafficking, and child abuse, attending the rally on May 30th at California's State Capitol was an absolute necessity for me. The energy and solidarity among advocates and survivors were palpable as we gathered to highlight the importance of Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) funding. VOCA funding is the backbone of California’s response to crime victims’ needs. This crucial funding provides an array of critical services and programs that support Californians after they have experienced a crime. These services include domestic violence service providers, RAPE CRISIS centers, legal assistance, human trafficking services, a range of options to address survivor homelessness, and other vital support systems. One key aspect of VOCA funding is that it originates from fines and penalties from convictions in federal cases, not from tax dollars. Every year, Congress determines the amount to be released from the fund, distributing it through formula grants and discretionary grants to federal, state, and Tribal victim assistance programs. However, in March 2024, Congress finalized the FY 23-24 funding bills and allocated $1.353 billion to VOCA. While this may seem substantial, it actually represents a significant cut of approximately $630 million compared to FY 23. The impact of these cuts is profound, especially for California. For FY 24, California’s crime victim services will receive $87 million, a drastic 43.7% REDUCTION from the $153.8 million allocation last year. This reduction in funding poses a serious threat to the availability and quality of support services for crime victims across the state. The rally was a powerful reminder of the importance of continued advocacy for sufficient VOCA funding. It is imperative that we, as a community, raise our voices to ensure that survivors receive the support they need and deserve. The cuts to VOCA funding are not just numbers on a spreadsheet—they represent real people whose lives and recovery are at stake. As we move forward, let us remain steadfast in our commitment to advocating for adequate funding and resources for all survivors. The fight for justice and support continues, and together, we can make a difference. #vocafunding #vocacuts #advocacy #socialwork #socialworker #advocate #rapecrisis
Last week in Sacramento: Federal cuts to VOCA funding remind us that we need to hold our elected officials accountable. There are many organizations that simply cannot function without this funding. In San Diego alone, Center for Community Solutions served over 13,000 survivors last year, providing safe housing, advocates, and much needed resources to people in their worst moments. The work they do is often life-saving. They do not deserve to be reduced to a line item that is in constant jeopardy of being cut. Supporting survivors supports communities.

Press Release** March 24, 2024 https://lnkd.in/diMV2uc6 February 24, 2024 – On Sunday, March 24, 2024, more than 50 residents of Memphis, TN, will gather to discuss the importance of determining and sharing one’s wishes for care through the end of life and beyond at the inaugural event, "End of Life Planning: What's the big deal anyway?". The event, held from 4:00-7:00 pm at 3681 Cherry Rd., is hosted by Empower Me!, a local non-profit and proud champion of The Conversation Project. Since 2012, The Conversation Project (TCP), an initiative of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), has been inspiring conversations about care through the end of life within homes and communities, garnering support on national, state, and local levels. At the heart of The Conversation Project is its Conversation Starter Guide, a free, downloadable, step-by-step guide developed to help individuals and those who matter most start conversations about care wishes now and through the end of life. TCP also offers free tools for how to choose a healthcare proxy, how to be a healthcare proxy, how to talk with a healthcare team, and guides for caregivers of seriously ill children or people with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. The Conversation Project’s Conversation Starter Guide was co-created with individuals from diverse backgrounds (race, ethnicity, gender, age, sexual orientation, religions, etc.), including those who have experience with a serious illness or who have gone through the end of life with a friend or family member (adult or child/teen). The Guide has been downloaded more than 550,000 times by individuals from all 50 states and 160+ countries, and it's currently available in multiple languages. The Conversation Guide has received support from individuals, healthcare providers, health plans, and employers as a simple and effective tool to normalize the conversation and guide the process. We have partnered with local attorneys, The Shelby County Probate Office (to discuss the probate process), Shelby County Clerk's office (Business property and Vehicle transfer of property). This will be a series of events to help facilitate through an end-of-life planning journal to assist residents to be prepared in their final days. "This is a hard conversation to have, but a critical conversation not to have," says Stephanie Gatewood, Founder, and CEO of Empower Me!, a local non-profit whose mission is to Empower Citizens through Education, Engagement, and providing community resources to members of the community who are at greatest risk. “We are grateful for the support of organizations like Empower Me! that help us share and spread this important message and work nationwide via intimate community settings,” says Kate DeBartolo, Senior Director of TCP. “We can’t plan for everything. But we can talk about what is most important — in our life, and in our healthcare — with those who matter

In health, one statement is consistently cited across all documents: "Female Community Health Volunteers (FCHVs) are the backbone of our health system." This is undeniably true. FCHVs are involved in every intervention requiring community mobilization. To keep them motivated, the government initiated an endowment fund for FCHVs by allocating NPR 50,000 per VDC. Over time, the government has gradually added to this seed money annually. With the shift to a federal system, it became necessary to create implementation guidelines to efficiently utilize these funds and address technical challenges at the municipal level. Recently, the Nursing and Social Security Division hosted a two-day workshop to finalize these guidelines for effectively operating FCHVs funds at the municipal level. Hopefully, input from across the provinces has refined the guidelines, supporting their finalization before cabinet enactment. #FCHVs #FCHVFund #MoHP #NursingDivision #PublicHealth #MadheshHealth
