Yesterday, I attended DocTalks at St. Joseph's Health Care, where Dr. Cheryl Forchuk delivered a speech on mental health and the systemic challenges faced by individuals dealing with homelessness and poverty. This topic is close for me, especially now that I volunteer with 519 Pursuit and witness these issues firsthand. Here are the key points that struck me. Did you know that: 1. Canada is the only industrialized nation without housing at the national level? 2. Approximately 2000 people in London are homeless, with 600 of them living without shelter over a year? 3. Homeless individuals are 70-90 times more likely to suffer from dementia, showing the urgent need for support and systemic change? 4. Government funding such as ODSP, OW, and OAS, provided to our friends on the street, is not enough for them to afford housing? I liked Dr. Forchuk’s analogy using musical chairs to illustrate systemic challenges: if chairs represent affordable housing and people circling them represent homeless individuals, to solve this issue we need to increase the number of chairs and reduce the number of circling people. There is a road System’s failure. Dr. Cheryl Forchuk insights have inspired a stronger call to action in me. Collaborating among community organizations, volunteering time, and building connections with Friends on the street are essential steps toward driving change. Let's unite to create meaningful change. Every action matters. 💪 #MentalHealthAwareness #EndHomelessness #CommunitySupport

Rituals and funerals are so important to those of us who are left behind, giving us closure, an opportunity to share with others what we loved and admired about the individual, an opportunity to hear from others of what impact our loved one had made on other peoples lives, a chance for one final opportunity to show how much we care.... Both myself and Fran from A Natural Undertaking sat over a cup of tea this afternoon sharing our own personal experiences of how positively powerful a good funeral can be in helping those who are mourning navigate the journey of grief. Both of us have lost close loved ones, both have experienced the planning of personalised funerals incorporating both the wishes of the person who has died, and those of the family members. We have both experienced amazing funerals that we have come away from saying "that was a really beautiful day". They have undoubtedly played a positive role in helping family members adjust to their loss. We also discussed how the inability of people being able to attend funerals during COVID had a huge impact on people's grieving processes, something that society has openly acknowledged and is still struggling with. Yet despite this knowledge, increasing numbers of people are choosing to not have a funeral where loved ones can gather to say goodbye and share personal stories and reflections, but choose to have direct cremations. I am not saying this wrong. But it leaves me with questions: Is the difference now that people have a choice that makes this an acceptable option? Do those individuals who are unable to attend a funeral of a loved one struggle as much with navigating the journey of grief as those people who couldn't attend funerals during COVID? I welcome your thoughts.... #changingtheconversations
#Funerals and rituals play a crucial role in helping our loved ones navigate the journey of grief after we have died. Had the privilege today of meeting up with Fran from A Natural Undertaking to take a tour of their new premises in Hall Green and discuss how they can engage with the Compassionate Communities project across Birmingham. A great new additional asset to #HallGreen Hall Green Neighbourhood Network Scheme NNS

🕊️ Let’s take a moment to remember the seniors in our lives and in our communities, especially those in senior living facilities. A small visit or a shared activity can mean the world to them - just a few minutes of your time can create joy and connection that lasts far longer. My team and I are gearing up for a trip to a local senior living home to spend quality time with some of these incredible people. We’re bringing along a fun craft to do together, but more than that, we’re bringing smiles, conversations, and open hearts. If you have a little time to give, consider visiting or volunteering at a nearby facility. It’s a gift for them - and for you. 💙 #RememberOurSeniors #GiveBack #CommunityConnections #EstatePlanning #CharlotteEstatePlanning #WillsandTrusts #ProbateLaw #EstateLawyer #CharlotteLawFirm #FinancialPlanning #AssetProtection #EstateAttorney #LegacyPlanning #CharlotteLaw #EstatePlan #WealthManagement #InheritancePlanning #CharlotteAttorney #ElderLaw #CharlotteBusiness #estatepreparation

Rallying for VOCA Funding at California's State Capitol May 30, 2024 As a social worker, certified sexual assault counselor, and advocate for survivors of sexual violence, human trafficking, and child abuse, attending the rally on May 30th at California's State Capitol was an absolute necessity for me. The energy and solidarity among advocates and survivors were palpable as we gathered to highlight the importance of Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) funding. VOCA funding is the backbone of California’s response to crime victims’ needs. This crucial funding provides an array of critical services and programs that support Californians after they have experienced a crime. These services include domestic violence service providers, RAPE CRISIS centers, legal assistance, human trafficking services, a range of options to address survivor homelessness, and other vital support systems. One key aspect of VOCA funding is that it originates from fines and penalties from convictions in federal cases, not from tax dollars. Every year, Congress determines the amount to be released from the fund, distributing it through formula grants and discretionary grants to federal, state, and Tribal victim assistance programs. However, in March 2024, Congress finalized the FY 23-24 funding bills and allocated $1.353 billion to VOCA. While this may seem substantial, it actually represents a significant cut of approximately $630 million compared to FY 23. The impact of these cuts is profound, especially for California. For FY 24, California’s crime victim services will receive $87 million, a drastic 43.7% REDUCTION from the $153.8 million allocation last year. This reduction in funding poses a serious threat to the availability and quality of support services for crime victims across the state. The rally was a powerful reminder of the importance of continued advocacy for sufficient VOCA funding. It is imperative that we, as a community, raise our voices to ensure that survivors receive the support they need and deserve. The cuts to VOCA funding are not just numbers on a spreadsheet—they represent real people whose lives and recovery are at stake. As we move forward, let us remain steadfast in our commitment to advocating for adequate funding and resources for all survivors. The fight for justice and support continues, and together, we can make a difference. #vocafunding #vocacuts #advocacy #socialwork #socialworker #advocate #rapecrisis
Last week in Sacramento: Federal cuts to VOCA funding remind us that we need to hold our elected officials accountable. There are many organizations that simply cannot function without this funding. In San Diego alone, Center for Community Solutions served over 13,000 survivors last year, providing safe housing, advocates, and much needed resources to people in their worst moments. The work they do is often life-saving. They do not deserve to be reduced to a line item that is in constant jeopardy of being cut. Supporting survivors supports communities.

#Accessibility, #Inclusion and #Equity in emergency management require planning for the diverse needs of community members, including individuals living with disabilities. The Office of Grants and Research is committed to helping meet these needs through the state and federally funded grant programs we manage. We’re grateful to our partners at the #WesternMass Regional #HomelandSecurity Advisory Council, who used FEMA funding awarded by OGR to complete Equity in Emergency Management reports for Berkshire, Franklin, Hampden and Hampshire counties, and each of the cities and towns in the region. Orchard Place is the only provider in Iowa certified by The Sanctuary Institute. This certification symbolizes our organization’s commitment to providing a higher level of care, a trauma-sensitive environment for the children and families we serve, and a better work environment for our team members. One easy way to use Sanctuary values is by holding a "Community Meeting" where the following questions are asked: How are you feeling today? The purpose of this question is to help all of us recognize our feelings and to manage them. What are your goals for today? Asking this question keeps us focused on the future. Who can you ask for help? The purpose of this question is to build our relationships with each other and to know we are not in this alone. #OrchardPlaceStrong #CommunityMeeting #Support #ChildrensMentalHealth #ConnectedToFeelings
