Today, we observe Health Care for People Experiencing Homelessness Day, a vital part of National Health Center Week. This day underscores the importance of providing comprehensive, compassionate health care to those experiencing homelessness, a group that faces unique and significant health challenges. The National Health Care for the Homeless Council (NHCHC) is a leader in this mission. NHCHC advocates for and provides high-quality health care to people without stable housing. Their work goes beyond immediate medical needs, addressing the complex social determinants of health that affect this vulnerable population. Through integrated care models, outreach services, and policy advocacy, NHCHC is making a tangible difference in the lives of many. They work to ensure that everyone, regardless of their housing status, receives the health care and support they need to thrive. On this day, let’s recognize and support the invaluable work of NHCHC, while also recognizing that stable, safe and affordable housing is a key part of the ecosystem a person needs to thrive. 🚨People experiencing homelessness have higher levels of physical and mental ill-health as opposed to people who are adequately housed. In some countries, the average age of death for people experiencing homelessness is up to 30 years lower compared to the general population. The complex health needs, reluctance to access #healthcare, and administrative and financial barriers have led to homeless organisations increasingly providing essential health services for this population. How are #homelessness services stepping up to offer essential healthcare support, and what practices are proving most effective ❓ 🩺 On this #WorldHealthDay, we want to highlight good practices in health services across the homelessness sector. ❓Did you know❓ Poor health is a major cause of homelessness. A common example: An injury or illness can lead to employment problems, making it difficult to maintain a regular schedule or perform work functions. Without income from work, an injury or illness quickly becomes a housing problem, leading to homelessness. This vicious cycle is difficult to break without access to funds for healthcare and support from friends and family. Out today in JAMA Internal Medicine https://lnkd.in/gHhaDUJc We find that #violence against people experiencing #homelessness is 30x ⬆️ than what the general public experiences each year. Using data from the #CAHomelessnessStudy, we find: ➡️ exposure to violence immediately proceeding homelessness, ➡️ unsheltered homelessness requiring people to sleep outdoors, ➡️ childhood abuse, and ➡️ regular drug use were associated with experiencing violence during the current episode of homelessness Clinicians can utilize: 🩺 universal provision of violence-related treatment resources, 🩺 #traumainformedcare that emphasizes survivor safety & self-agency, and 🩺 knowledge and provision of housing resources to help break the cycle of violence that is exacerbated by homelessness Policy priorities include improving access to: 💡 non-congregate shelter, 💡 affordable and supportive permanent housing with services that are appropriate for survivors of violence and those with behavioral health conditions, and 💡long-term funding for violence prevention and recovery 🙏 Coauthors: Margot Kushel MD, Cheyenne Garcia, Jennafer Birkmeyer, Angelica DeGaetano UCSF Benioff Homelessness & Housing Initiative UCSF Action Research Center for Health Equity at ZSFG University of California, San Francisco Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center

🌍 On this World Homelessness Day, let’s talk about an aspect of health care for that is difficult for people experiencing homelessness to access: oral health care   For many people experiencing homelessness, access to oral health care is extremely limited. Poor oral health can lead to a myriad of issues, affecting not just physical health but also mental wellbeing and self-esteem. Without good oral health care, individuals may face challenges in engaging socially and maintaining overall health.   As professionals, we have an opportunity to make a difference. Here are a few ways we can help:   Raise Awareness: Share information about the importance of oral health and its impact on overall wellbeing, especially for those experiencing homelessness.   Support Local Initiatives: Partner with dental clinics and or organisations that provide free or low-cost dental care to homeless individuals.   Volunteer Your Skills: If you’re in the dental profession, consider offering your services to local shelters or community health events.   Advocate for Access: Support policies that improve access to oral health care for underserved communities.   Together we can ensure that everyone has the chance to smile with confidence.
