I did not have the same economic power at the beginning of my cybersecurity than I do now with 10+ years of experience. I could not afford: - $2,000+ cybersecurity conferences - $8,000+ cybersecurity trainings - Multiple industry memberships and paid events Which means I did not have access to the conversations that take place in those settings. Nor did I have access to the kind of informal mentoring and job opportunities that get traded. To ensure equitable financial access, we're using a sliding-scale for the Hacker in Heels Salon. A sliding scale makes access to a resource relative to the circumstances that an individual finds themselves in. Women with 0-4 years of experience in cybersecurity will pay less than women with 5-9 years of experience, who will pay less than women with 10+ years of experience. This accounts for the differences in financial earnings expected as a woman's cybersecurity careers progresses. ALL women who attend will get outsized value from the event in everything from the quality of the food, the beauty of the space, and the caliber of conversation and connection. It's just another way that Hacker in Heels is creating inclusive events and community for women in cybersecurity. #womenincybersecurity #cybersecurity #wicys
Stacey Based on my experience, I think you're over-romanticizing what goes on at the conferences and training. I've taken a step back from such things largely due the fact that I'd put effort into sharing analysis/findings, and new ideas, only for it to go over like a bag of hammers. The single hardest thing to get at these events is feedback...because no one goes to these events to see and process new ideas. Yes, folks go to present, but how often do you see someone post to social media any feedback?
I'm interested in the Salon. How does the sliding-scale work? I just started studying to get into cybersecurity. Thank you.
Differences in experience, do not always equate to differences in Financial earnings. Also, many conference attendees have their passes paid for by Fortune500 companies... should they still pay less? Interesting strategy indeed.
I like this idea, but I think women who have taken a pause on their career (most likely for childrearing reasons) shouldn’t be expected to pay more if they have more experience IF they’re currently out of the workforce. What are your thoughts on this?
This is very cool, Stacey Champagne. Great idea. ...I still can't afford to attend events in this space with 20 years in the industry.
What a great idea!!
Tiffany Seixas I think you’d appreciate this
