Happy Veteran's Day weekend! I am not a veteran yet because I am still on active duty, but I will be a veteran at some point. So, I want to thank those that served at one point in uniform and have already shifted their service from military service to other noble types of service! Many aspects of our veteran population are important for us all to be cognizant of not just this weekend, but continually. Two of those aspects from this linked article are: 1) The share of the U.S. population with military experience has declined, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau. In 1980, about 18% of U.S. adults were veterans, but that share fell to 6% in 2022. 2) Fewer members of Congress have military experience than in the past, according to a Center analysis of the 118th Congress conducted after the 2022 congressional elections. In the current Congress, 18% of representatives and 17% of senators are veterans, down drastically from just a few decades ago. I am not sure how much that percentage (% in Congress that are veterans) will change due to this year's elections, but regardless, one way to thank a veteran is to communicate with your Senators and Representatives to ensure that our ~16 million veterans are provided the resources and assistance they need in their individual circumstances (because all are unique). Remember, Veteran's Day is for those (both living and deceased) that have served in uniform in the past. Armed Forces Day (3rd Saturday each May) is for those still serving in uniform. And Memorial Day (last Monday of each May) is for those that died while serving in uniform. So, please consider taking some time to find one of those 16 million veterans (or just 6% of our population) and thank them for their service and see what they need from Congress.

Progress: According to the annual #demographics report from the United States Department of Defense, the active-duty and selected reserve population was 58,282 lower than in 2021, for a total of 2,077,630 service members. Over the same period, the percentage of women increased slightly – rising to 17.5% of the active duty force from 17.3% and 21.6% of the selected reserve from 21.4%. Since 2005, the percentage of active duty military women has increased by 2.9% while the percentage of women in the selected reserve has risen by 4.4%. Okay, the incoming #SecDef wants to purge the military of women. We have a declining military force and he wants to make it worse? One hundred and forty three thousand plus veterans in Great Britain own a business. It's a pretty staggering number when you think about it..... This new data from evidence-based research highlights the size of the veteran-owned business community in England, Wales and Scotland by using the Census data from each country. This extremely important data shows that whilst Veteran Owned UK is fast approaching 2000 business registered, there is a huge way to go within the total veteran-owned business community. What are your thoughts on this numbers? Higher than expected? Lower? I would love to hear your thoughts.
143,043 veterans in Great Britain (England, Wales and Scotland) own a business. This is invaluable data that shows us what the community of veteran-owned businesses looks like in terms of scale. The fact that this data is based on large datasets from the 2021 Census of England and Wales alongside the 2022 Census of Scotland shows that the numbers are based on statistical facts as of the dates of each census. This is the the only available research to date that has used national, large datasets to give a definitive answer on the population of veterans who own businesses. From the data, we can also see the percentage of Males and Females within a total veteran population for Great Britain. And interestingly, we can see that 3.8% of the total population of Great Britain has served within the Armed Forces at some point. What are your thoughts on these numbers? We would love to hear them.

Have you heard that military-connected people feel disconnected from mainstream America? Better yet, once you understand that this is true, what can you do to help them feel more connected? Since 2017, the Arizona Coalition for Military Families, in collaboration with the Arizona State University, has surveyed Arizona’s Veteran community every other year. The purpose is to gain insight into the needs of Arizona’s military and Veteran population to assess interventions, improve care and the available resources. Information collected is used to make recommendations for suicide prevention, address basic needs, and reduce disparities. The 2023 survey received nearly 9,000 submissions, with respondents from each of Arisona’s 15 counties. Demographics include: 47.52% are 65+ years; 71.61% are Male; 77% are Veterans; 17% are Family; 2.1% are Military; and .5% are community helpers. When it comes to feeling lonely, this is what AZ Veterans say: * 43.61% of service members reported feeling lonely or isolated from people around them sometimes, most of the time, or always. * 38.19% of Veterans reported feeling lonely or isolated from people around them sometimes, most of the time, or always. * 37.88% of family member respondents reported feeling lonely or isolated from people around them sometimes, most of the time, or always Does this sound about right to you?
