Those of you who follow me know that behavioral traffic safety is my gig, but I gotta give a shout out to the engineers who developed roundabouts. This week the nation is celebrating these circular beauties -- yes, it's National Roundabouts Week. The latest update on their effectiveness comes from Ohio, where the Department of Transportation reports that installing roundabouts at 150 intersections has resulted in injury/fatal crash reductions ranging from 38% to 100%. I take advantage of every opportunity to educate the public not only about the effectiveness of roundabouts, but also how to safely navigate them. That's putting the Safe System principles of safer roads, safer people, safer speeds.... into practice.
