Why has the #ESG space expanded at such pace? It's a good question and there is no doubt it captured the corporate imagination to a greater extent than Corporate Environmentalism in the '80's and '90's or CSR in the 2000's. To some extent the difference is that for some organisations it is their investors that are driving the adoption, of course it may just because it wraps up a raft of issues that are indicators of good corporate management at a time when the world is more aware and open to action on lots of fronts. Whether that be environmental responsibility, emissions reduction, fair wages for employees, ethical procurement, bribery and corruption, independent board members and so on. An area that is increasingly part of ESG is #resilience. Whilst it was there before, certainly post COVID this has come to the fore as a critical part of business planning and operations and something investors, stakeholders and customers want to be reassured about. Adèle Cadario from the Global Center on Adaptation has written an article entitled 'Climate Adaption in Ports: a global imperative for resilience'. See below 👇 https://lnkd.in/gK-NWj8D In her article she explains why #ports are vulnerable - of course - ports are on the coast (unless inland, freshwater ports) and therefore vulnerable to changes in sea level, storm surges and flooding (and indeed much more, but let's not get carried away at this stage). She reminds us that ports 'play a critical role in international trade' - indeed the vast majority of goods move through ports for their international transport journey: Port of Rotterdam for example, handles 14 million containers each year. Port of London Authority handles 50 million tonnes of cargo a year, Port of Los Angeles approximately 10 million TEU. In many countries a climate related port shut down could create a food or indeed energy security issue. Of course the climate risks are beyond just the obvious, ports are at the end of the energy networks usually, often the periphery of the road and rail network for onward logistics and so their vulnerability is often linked to the actions of others. This is where a robust approach to resilience is critical, understanding the exposures to your specific business, as opposed to generic tick-box paperwork, then planning and engaging accordingly to mitigate those risks. Adele also argues that investments in infrastructure should be 'climate proofed', nature based solutions should be employed along with advanced early warning systems and public-private-partnerships. Certainly Climate resilience is a team activity, all of us need to be pushing in the same direction, ideally at the same time.... Now is the time to react to her call to arms... #ClimateResilience #NatureBasedSolutions #AdvancedEarlyWarningSystems #PublicPrivatePartnerships #Collaboration (Please excuse the rather catastrophic image from Bing Image Creator)

✈ Sustainable Aviation Fuel - Greenwash or a real prospect? According to a report by the Institute for Policy Studies it's greenwash because it is simply not scaleable. “To bring these fuels to the scale needed would require massive subsidies, the trade-offs would be unacceptable and would take resources aware from more urgent decarbonization priorities." Chuck Collins, report co-author. Investing in and scaling up production could threaten global food security (to grow feedstocks) and nature-based carbon sinks like forests and wetlands. The report highlights that the aviation industry has been missing its SAF targets for 20 years and is lobbying to weaken standards and sustainability definitions. Amongst other things the report recommends: 👉 investment in ground travel 👉 more research into the viability of SAF 👉 penalties for greenwashing 👉 increasing jet fuel taxes 👉 taxing or banning short hop flights (<210 miles) Find the link to the report in the comments below 👇 What's your take? #SAF #SustainableAviationFuel
