Dockwise Blue Merlin is a semisubmersible heavy-lift ship operated by Dockwise, a company based in the Netherlands. The ship is designed to transport very large and heavy cargo, such as drilling rigs, ships, and other massive structures. Specifications for the Blue Merlin include a length of 224.8 meters and a width of 63.1 meters. The ship has a deck area of 11,227 square meters, which can accommodate a wide range of oversized cargo. It is powered by a diesel engine producing 12,640 kW (16,950 horsepower), enabling a cruising speed of 14.5 knots. The ship has a deadweight of 76,000 metric tons. Additionally, Blue Merlin features 38 cabins to accommodate up to 60 people, along with amenities such as a gym, sauna, and swimming facilities. A notable feature is its secure citadel, designed to protect the crew in the event of pirate attacks. The Blue Merlin employs a submerging technique to load and unload cargo, where the ship partially submerges itself underwater, allowing cargo to float onto the deck, before being raised back to its normal height.

You can’t book a refit too early. A proper refit of a large sailing yacht’s rig and sails is no small project. Like any refit, the rig refit can turn into a minefield of unexpected and expensive surprises. Just sending much of the rig away will cost thousands. Modern materials also mean special skills. Captains really should start thinking about it at least a year in advance so we can start working with the captain on the requirements and work list…and the numbers. Last week, we took a significant step toward sustainable water management with the installation of stage 1 of Cornerstone’s stormwater recycling system. This 125,000L tank will collect and reuse stormwater from 172+ acres to irrigate 13.45 acres of greenspace. Once fully operational in 2027, the system is expected to save 22,465,000L of potable water annually (enough to fill nine Olympic-sized swimming pools) and reduce costs by $70,000 per year.
The steep hill and difficult road conditions made this lift a challenge, but thanks to the communication and dedication of our crew and partners, we were able to overcome it. Yesterday, we successfully hoisted and transported a tank to the client’s desired location. We used our 200-ton Demag AC160-2 crane and a 50-ton Manitex 50155SHL crane. We brought along John, Nate, and Gordy to tackle this lift. We set up the 200-ton crane to hoist the tank onto a transport truck provided by our partners at Cowtown. We then carefully maneuvered the 200-ton crane down the steep, icy incline where it would be positioned for the second part of the lift. While John ensured the crane was level, our 50-ton crane arrived to assist by backing up the trailer. Once everything was in position, John hooked onto the top of the tank while the 50-ton crane connected to the bottom to keep the unit upright. Roads age and failures in them will start to happen. Mastic One is a great solution to fixing a lot of roads in poor condition, but my first question is when I see these issues is, are we doing enough crack sealing at the right time. The answer I get is no.
