CLIME based Division of Molecular Biology and Human Genetics and Ruvandhi Nathavitharana based at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School are conducting the TWART-TB study. THWART-TB is based in Tygerberg Hospital, Cape Town, and is aiming to tackle the global TB crisis. With 1.7 billion people infected, this research focuses on health workers at high risk in this setting (34% annually!). By conducting detailed evaluations, they plan on uncovering immune responses to better predict who may develop TB disease. And that’s true no matter what class of molecules you look at,” says the senior study author, Michael Snyder, PhD, a professor of genetics at Stanford Medicine in California. “During both these periods, lots of shifts are happening. Exciting news! Our latest publication from Nature Aging, led by Dr. Andrew Teschendorff's lab at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, delves into the question of what drives epigenetic aging clocks. The study used advanced simulation models and extensive DNAm data from over 25 independent cohorts totaling 22,770 samples. The findings revealed that between 66% to 90% of the accuracy of various epigenetic clocks could be explained by stochastic processes. This was particularly pronounced in 1st generation clocks, with Zhang's clock showing that up to 90% of its predictive capability could be attributed to these random changes. However, biologically trained 2nd generation clocks had significantly less stochastic variation, meaning they are measuring more dynamic processes. This is an important discovery, as it suggests that newer clocks could be easier to intervene on and improve, since stochastic variation is harder to prevent. Overall, this study provides another reason to move away from 1st generation clocks. 🔬 Research in the Spotlight 🔍 A fascinating study published today in Nature Aging used multi-omics data clustering to interrogate nonlinear changes during human aging. Most interestingly, the study found that 'substantial dysregulation' occurs at two major periods at approximately 44 years and 60 years of chronological age. (Not Me. I have a Peloton and now schedule my own 'crests' as 90 min scenic rides.) #MotivationMonday: Vilcek Creative Promise Prize-winning scientist Howard Chang is getting to the root of genetics, chromosomes, and autoimmune diseases. A study authored by Chang and his team at the Stanford University School of Medicine delves into how antibodies affiliated with X-chromosomes impact the expression of autoimmune diseases like Sjogren's Syndrome and Lupus. Bruce Goldman summarizes Chang's research findings for Stanford. Chang's research findings are available now through PubMed, and the full peer-reviewed paper will be published in the February 2025 issue of Cell, published by Cell Press. These research findings help to shine light on important issues of gender diversity and representation in scientific research and study. Howard Chang is a physician and research scientist at Stanford University, and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Investigator. Born in Taiwan, Chang is an alumnus of Harvard University and Stanford.
