Dr. Celina Yong, MD, MBA, MSc, a CARE faculty member, has recently published a paper titled “Racial/Ethnic Disparities in Aortic Valve Replacement Among Medicare Beneficiaries in the United States, 2012-2019” in the American Journal of Medicine. The study found that aortic valve replacement rates within 6 months of aortic stenosis admission are lower for Black, Hispanic, and Asian individuals compared to White individuals. These race-related differences in aortic stenosis treatment reflect complex issues in diagnosis and management, warranting a comprehensive reassessment of the entire care spectrum for disadvantaged populations. Congratulations to our University of Sydney medicine and health researchers who have received Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care Medical Research Future Fund (#MRFF) Primary health Care Research grants 🎉 ⭐ Professor Sarah Dennis will work with a multidisciplinary team to improve health outcomes of comprehensive evidence-based care for people with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). ⭐ Professor Trudy Rebbeck and her team will implement a new care pathway for Australians with burdensome musculoskeletal disorders living in rural and remote locations. The study intends to identify people who may recover well or poorly, using a simple online tool at the point of care to ensure a suitable recovery process. ⭐ Associate Professor Christopher Williams and his team address the low back pain impacting lifestyle risks for chronic disease and not receiving care to manage both. Their research will test if a co-designed adaptation of an effective lifestyle program can be scaled in rural primary care to support populations with lifestyle risks and disability from low back pain. Isn’t it baffling that only 30% of clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) for spinal cord injury (SCI) address the needs of ageing individuals? This is a key finding of a recent review of SCI clinical practice guidelines by Seijas et al. The existing ageing-related recommendations are predominantly focused on physiological and functional aspects. They lack comprehensive coverage of broader issues like mental health, mobility, and social participation. In our latest publication highlight, we summarize the key recommendations of a CPG review by Seijas et al. which explores how we can meet the complex and multilayered health needs of an ageing SCI population. Healthcare professionals, patients and caregivers all play a central role in the development of high-quality, age-specific guidelines that consider the unique challenges of those ageing with a SCI. On the foundations of this groundbreaking historical work, there are many reasons to continue navigating and addressing these risk factors in different levels of research. Between 2010 and 2022, a total of 10,951,403 deaths were attributed to cardiovascular disease (CVD), with 75.6% attributed to heart disease and 16.9% to stroke. The age-adjusted mortality rate (AAMR) for CVD experienced a decline of 8.9% from 2010 to 2019, dropping from 456.6 to 416.0 per 100,000. However, from 2019 to 2022, there was a subsequent increase of 9.3%, bringing the rate to 454.5 per 100,000, which was close to the 2010 rate of 456.7 per 100,000. https://lnkd.in/eJfmr4kt).
