Collective impact is a network of community members, organizations, and institutions that advance equity by learning together, aligning, and integrating their actions to achieve population and system-level change. What are the four phases of collective impact? 1) A clear, common purpose; 2) Community engagement and co-production; 3) Relationships and trust; and 4) Results and accountability.

Trump got in. I’m not going to waste energy writing about it. But it does remind me how important it is for us to get active in our communities. Culture and media often tell us that voting is the most meaningful way to participate in democracy. But that's not the whole truth. When we come together, we have power right in our backyards. At the heart of it, there are two ways to approach life: love and fear, open and closed. For a long time, our governing bodies, left and right, have leaned in the wrong direction. The best way to challenge that isn’t by complaining or disengaging; it’s by showing up, fostering, and growing love and care within our circle of influence. Yes, good vibes alone aren’t enough. But we need to remember how connected and interdependent we are—and how powerful we can be when we come together. That’s why I helped form We Love Fitzroy. It's a network for locals to build relationships and connections rooted in love and strength, not fear or deficits. We're using methods from Asset-Based Community Development and Appreciative Inquiry to help connect locals around their strengths, skills, and passions. It's like an incubator for local participation. And long-term, a more robust democracy. We’re volunteer-run and led. If you live in or around Fitzroy and want to get involved, register your interest at welovefitzroy.com. We’ll be hosting an info session early next month, so stay tuned!

Power is a very abstract idea, a big and complicated concept. Each of us understands it in our own way, within the context of the issues we work on, the people we work with, what we have read about it, or based on our own experiences of power. The purpose of this Unpacking Power course is to sort out the confusion and help us move to a shared understanding of power so that all of us who are committed to community development or social justice can build our strategies from a more comprehensive, shared definition and analysis of power as it operates in society, regardless of our specific issues, or socio-economic, political and cultural contexts.
