Hurricane Helene has left a path of devastation across the Southeastern U.S., affecting millions and causing significant disruptions in logistics and supply chains. As a Category 4 storm, Helene unleashed torrential rains, winds over 140 mph, and extensive flooding, crippling critical infrastructure from Florida to Virginia. One of the hardest-hit areas is I-40 in Tennessee and North Carolina, where substantial sections of the highway have been washed away. Road closures and power outages are escalating costs and severely hindering the movement of goods. Experts predict it may take weeks for logistics to stabilize in affected regions.

As Hurricane Helene has now passed through Florida and the Southeast, Traffic Tech has been actively monitoring its aftermath on key logistics and transportation hubs. While Florida’s ports avoided major damage, temporary closures and delays during the storm affected freight movement. Flooding and road closures in inland areas, especially in Georgia and the Carolinas, caused significant disruptions to transportation routes. David Montgomery, Vice President North America, Cross Border, located in Traffic Tech’s Tampa office, shares: “Throughout the weekend, the Tampa office worked diligently to support and accommodate new logistics requirements as Helene passed through FL, GA, and NC. Our customers had logistics plans shift as damage from the storm, closed roads, and inaccessible areas developed as the storm made landfall. We kept in contact with our customers and assisted in any way we could.” Our team remains committed to minimizing disruption for our clients as recovery efforts continue, providing ongoing support and updates as needed. #TrafficTech #GlobalLogistics #HurricaneHelene #SupplyChain #Transportation

With interstate closures, out-of-service rail lines and nearly 600 roads closed or impassable in the wake of Hurricane Helene, moving goods into and out of affected regions remains challenging. While the initial shock was severe — with the volume of shipments declining as much as 34% in Florida and Georgia on a week-over-week basis — we're starting to see recovery. FourKites data shows that shipments destined for Florida, Georgia and South Carolina plummeted more than 25% on a week-over-week basis in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Helene. By Tuesday, September 29, shipment volumes had largely recovered for the majority of states in the storm's path — with Florida seeing a 20% week-over-week increase. FourKites will continue to track the impact of tropical storms and hurricanes on global supply chain operations — make sure to follow and stay tuned for further updates. #data #HurricaneHelene #Florida #supplychain

The Impact of Hurricanes on the Trucking Industry: A Double-Edged Sword With the recent hurricane in Florida, it's essential to understand how severe weather affects the trucking industry. On one hand, hurricanes disrupt operations by damaging roads, causing delays, and endangering drivers. Deliveries are delayed, fuel costs rise due to detours, and equipment can face damage, leading to increased operational costs for carriers. On the other hand, these events often create an urgent demand for relief supplies, fuel, and construction materials, increasing freight opportunities. Many truckers find themselves on the frontlines, helping rebuild affected areas. For carriers, it’s about balancing the risks and opportunities. While safety always comes first, those who can navigate the challenges often find new markets and partnerships through disaster relief efforts. #Trucking #Logistics #HurricaneImpact #Florida
