Last week, we asked: What manufacturing innovations are you seeing in our industry that really excite you? For our team, we believe footwear manufacturers are revolutionizing the industry with their affordable, eco-friendly innovations. What does this look like? Traditionally, creating plastic and rubber components requires expensive, machined metal tools. However, Dutch startup What the Future Footwear BV is "breaking the mold" by producing natural rubber soles using 5-cent molds. Inspired by the packing and ice cream industry, the founder thought, "If I can make ice cream in these cheap molds, why not sneaker components?" This led to the creation of natural rubber outsoles. But their innovations don’t stop there. By incorporating air, they developed lightweight foams suitable for midsoles and insoles, comparable in density to conventional EVA foams but with much better physical properties. Now, they’re aiming to eliminate the manual attachment of soles, opting for a direct attach method using simple 3D printed jigs and the inexpensive molds.
