Exciting news from a long-term mission launched by our #Ariane5! 🤩🚀 #BepiColombo was carried aboard a rather special Ariane 5, operated by ARIANESPACE. The launcher was capable of taking its passenger to a hyperbolic escape orbit, enabling it to pull itself free of Earth’s “gravity well” and begin its journey to Mercury at an absolute velocity of close to 40,000 km/h. Whereas Ariane 5 usually launched missions of about 10 tons to geostationary transfer orbit (GTO), this time it had to launch a 4-ton payload, while driving the launcher to a velocity greater than that of a traditional launch, so that the satellite could escape from Earth orbit. Specific control and propulsion adjustments were therefore needed and, even if the launcher’s structure was not modified, this required additional checks occupying about 30 #RocketMakers for a period of two years. The #accuracy that #Proba3 will bring to get the #eclipses and allow the #corona observation is something #unpreceeded, both linear and angular #precision is insane! 2 satellites flying at speeds above 1km/s (around Apogee, where formation flying happens) with an accuracy of millimeter and arc-sec before they break formation and go up to 10km/s while passing the Perigee, repeating every ~19.5h in a #autonomous way. That's Proba-3!

☄️ ESA Begins Preparation for RAMSES Planetary Defense Mission🌌 The European Space Agency - ESA has begun preparatory work for the Rapid Apophis Mission for Space Safety #Ramses. This mission will rendezvous with asteroid 99942 Apophis and accompany it during its close flyby of Earth in 2029, offering a unique opportunity for science and planetary defence. Apophis, measuring 375 meters, will pass within 32,000 km of Earth’s surface on April 13, 2029, visible to around two billion people. ESA’s Ramses spacecraft aims to launch in April 2028 to accompany the asteroid during the flyby and study how Earth’s gravity affects the asteroid. Space Team Europe for Hera: Heli Greus - Heli Greus, Hera Product Assurance and Safety Manager at ESA, presents Hera and its instruments before the spacecraft left the Agency’s technical heart in the Netherlands. Her contribution to the mission is to make sure that whatever goes insite Hera will survive the space environment. To her, the biggest challenge was combining Hera with the CubeSats Juventas and Milani, which follow industrial rules and a ‘NewSpace’ approach. Hera is ESA's first planetary defence mission, heading to a unique target among the 1.3 million known asteroids of our Solar System. On 26 September 2022 NASA’s DART mission performed humankind’s first test of asteroid deflection by crashing into the Great-Pyramid-sized Dimorphos moonlet. The result was a shift in its orbit around the mountain-sized Didymos main asteroid. Now comes ESA’s own contribution to this international collaboration: the Hera mission will revisit Dimorphos to gather vital close-up data about the deflected body.

The mission has already achieved two major milestones: a first flyby of the Moon and Earth and the first maneuver using Earth's gravity to redirect its trajectory toward a flyby of Venus in August 2025. The video shows the sequence of images captured by the spacecraft during the maneuver.
