Mould and Die - machine a whole car!! As part of our ongoing series of videos with Lee Scott of Starrag, MTDCNC's Paul Jones finds out about the complexities of making mould & dies, and how Starrag’s machines overcome these issues. Mould and dies can range from small parts to parts as large as a motor car. But making these comes with their own issues; because they are used as moulds/dies, any imperfections will be reflected in the end component. Therefore there can’t be any blends, mis-matches or blemishes. Not only that, you need to consider the accuracy. How does a machine accommodate for thermal behaviour, mechanical behaviour and other complexities when making these parts? StReMa Team Gathers for a Project Meeting The #StReMa project team recently came together to reflect on the journey over the past two years and chart the course for the final stretch ahead. StReMa aims to reduce resource consumption in manufacturing processes by applying EHLA coatings to stamping, embossing, and bending tools. This innovative approach increases the lifespan and reusability of tools post-use, resulting in significant savings of materials, energy, and CO2 emissions. The team reviewed the current status and began planning for the remaining six months of the project. So far they gained a thorough understanding of DED coatings for stamping tools. Multiple of said tools have already been successfully deployed in real-world scenarios.  Stamping tests using the remaining bending tools are still pending. Additionally, further tests on previously studied tool geometries are planned.
