One of the subconscious arguments against hiring non-Swedish speakers in Sweden is "If they don't speak Swedish, how will they fit into our fika culture?". A rebuttal, if I may. ☕ Coffee breaks are universal. Please trust that most of us know how it works. ☕ Diverse hiring extends beyond gender and ethnic diversity. The big benefit of diverse hiring lies in the diversity of thought and culture. By hiring to fit in with the fika culture, you're negating the diversity that you're trying to build. ☕ English in the fika room can help Swedish employees that aren't comfortable speaking English to practice and grow, all while fostering a community mindset. Growth can't happen without pushing boundaries. Instead of using fika as a reflection of cultural fit, use it as a tool to stretch the company culture into something naturally inclusive. By welcoming non-Swedish speakers, you're taking a significant step toward creating a more dynamic and globally-minded company culture. What's your favorite fika treat? As a Muslim, attending Friday prayers is really important to me, and it usually takes about 30-40 minutes. However, my lunch break is only 30 minutes long. So, I find myself wondering: Is it reasonable to ask for an extra 30 minutes to attend this service—especially if I make up for the time by staying later in the day? Here’s the scoop: I’m in a salaried, unionized position, which adds another layer to the situation. I know that workplaces have to be mindful of religious practices, but I also want to ensure I approach this matter professionally and respectfully. Very interesting to tag countries as extrovert va introvert vs possibly a mix (yes post generalisation) and hence map possible perceptions and relations between each other on basis of extrovert vs extrovert - extrovert vs introvert and introvert vs introvert chemistry, interactions, reactions and judgements… then round 2 we can map several aspects of a nation as extrovert aspects vs introvert aspects and then map them against so called extrovert vs introvertnations… we would be able to arrive at a interaction - engagement - soft power strategy for nation branding and people to people perception building and lobbying… but also for tourism, employment and so many other categories… Interesting to do :)
