At a tech conference recently, an old friend asked me, “What’s it like being an entrepreneur?” I replied it’s a lot like being a farmer, the same principle is at work. The life of a farmer runs season to season as he: - tills the land - picks the crop to farm - invests in all the material - works day in & day out daily - persevere daily for his vision and dream It takes months for those small seedlings to rise and become sizable crops. And yet, the farmer lives on the farm, tending to each crop with love and care. Even though he knows the risk of natural calamity and 10s of other factors can haunt him, he is still at it daily. Now, if you put entrepreneurship in this context, he also: - picks out the idea - sees the dream & maps his vision - starts out & bulbs his team for his startup - works day and night for his ideas and dream - he also perseveres despite many challenges From that idea to that incoming revenue, it’s all a big risk. You can lose your will, your motivation, and, with it, everything you’ve invested. You need a lot to take on entrepreneurship, but I’d say learn to preserve first, and that’s what has gotten me through and taken me this far. Starting The Cloud Intelligence Inc., building AI solutions like midoc for real change and now on the cusp of launching it, It’s been one great journey of perseverance and good work…. – P.S: If you’re also a founder, what’s your take on entrepreneurship?

My friend Hazim Mohamad made something cool, and I'm excited to tell you about it! It's called CoffeeSpace ☕️, and it's kind of like Tinder or Hinge, but for connecting with people who are into starting businesses. 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐂𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐒𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞: - Every day, you'll get suggestions of people you might want to connect with. If you both like each other, you can start talking! - You can search for people with specific experience, like if they've worked in a startup before, or if they want to commit to an idea. - You can also share things about yourself to show what you're like and why you want to build something. Since they started just 7 weeks ago, they've already had 1,500 people connect on the platform! If you're working on a project or just thinking about starting one, you should give it a try! Two key takeaways from this evening’s Tech Safari Nairobi Mixer that took place at Antler East Africa, ABC Place, Westlands. 1. Going global from the start isn't just a strategy; it's a necessity in our increasingly interconnected world. Learning how different markets work and seizing international opportunities early can fuel growth, innovation and resilience. 2. Entrepreneurship communities are mission driven societies that are the lifeblood of startups. Building a community is not building an audience; it's bringing people together who interact, focus on impact, are actively engaged and add value to each other. #Entrepreneurship #Impact #Globalization #Innovation Caleb Maru Joyce Mbaya

The other day, my 9-year-old, Kiyan, overheard me on a Zoom call about entrepreneurship for refugees. Curious as always, he asked, "Dad, what does 'entrepreneurship' mean?" I paused to think. How do you simplify something so layered for a 9-year-old? Finally, I said, "Entrepreneurship is like noticing something people need and figuring out how to make it happen. Imagine your classmates are always losing their pencils. You come up with an idea for a magnetic pencil holder that sticks to desks. You design it, make it, and sell it to others who need it. That’s what entrepreneurs do—they solve problems or create something useful, then share it with the world." Kiyan, who often watches Shark Tank with me, didn’t miss a beat. “So, entrepreneurship isn’t about passion (quoting one of the judges on Shark Tank)—it’s about solving the right problems?” he asked. I smiled, took a deep breath, and nodded. The advice to “follow your passion” sounds inspiring. It’s the kind of wisdom that graces motivational posters and graduation speeches. But when you study the businesses truly reshaping the world, the reality is far more grounded. Take TimeIsBrain a startup revolutionizing stroke care with AI-powered diagnostics. They didn’t set out to follow a passion—they set out to save lives, tackling one of healthcare’s most urgent challenges. Or consider JoltTech, a company advancing the green hydrogen sector by drastically lowering production costs for clean energy. Their mission wasn’t driven by flash or trendiness; it was driven by solving a critical barrier in renewable energy, one that’s now positioning them as industry leaders. Then there’s Grasshopper Air Mobility, developing electric superdrones to modernize logistics. Their success isn’t fueled by excitement for drones; it’s fueled by the realization that industries needed eco-friendly, efficient transport solutions. What connects these stories isn’t passion—it’s purpose. These businesses thrive because they identify and solve meaningful problems, ones that demand solutions. The truth is, passion fades when it isn’t tethered to impact. What sustains a business—what makes it indispensable—is solving problems so well that the world can’t ignore it. So, here’s the real question for entrepreneurs: Are you chasing what excites you, or are you committing to solving what truly matters? or is it a hybrid of both? #Entrepreneurship #ProblemSolving #PurposeDriven #Innovation #Startups

It’s 5 weeks until Global Entrepreneurship Week UK kicks off with 40,000 events and activities expected to take place across 200 countries. GEN UK is hosting GEW UK, 18-24 November, with our colleagues at Centre for Entrepreneurs. This year we are focusing on place with the theme, Entrepreneurs Thrive Here. We are inviting towns, cities and regions across the UK to champion their entrepreneurs and strengthen their ecosystems ability to innovate and grow. Being a GEW Champion provides the catalyst to discover a community’s hidden potential, and support startup and scaling businesses to thrive, create jobs and attract inward investment. Through building closer, more integrated relationships helps reveal the strengths and challenges of an ecosystem - the first step to a better understanding of the targeted support needed - from training to funding required to grow. With a comprehensive map of the ecosystem enables communities to achieve more informed and effective marketing and promotion. GEW is the world’s largest celebration of entrepreneurship and open to everyone from the wannapreneurs to the founders of startups and scaleups, all ages, all stages, all sectors.
