United States wine consumption is on a stark decline. According to the Wine Institute, 2023’s 2.68 gallons of total wine per resident rates just above 2010 levels. Many factors contribute to these falling numbers, but within the wine industry concern over the rise of the Neo-Prohibition movement is most striking. Believing wine’s narrative has been lost amid the larger alcohol abstinence messaging, MacNeil joined forces with two wine industry communicators, Gino Colangelo, president of Colangelo and Partners, and Kimberly Charles, founder and president of Charles Communications Associates, to launch an international campaign called, Come Over October, encouraging wine lovers to gather together and share a glass of wine in October. “For its eleven-thousand-year history, wine has been a communal beverage that brings people together. It’s a beverage of friendship – creating new friendships and deepening old,” she says. “This story is not being told.” Come Over October Karen MacNeil Gino Colangelo Colangelo & Partners Willamette Valley Wineries Association Abbey Road farm Hispanics in Wine & Spirits, Inc. 🍇 Australian Wines Excel at Decanter World Wine Awards in London 🏆 Australian wines achieved remarkable success at the prestigious Decanter World Wine Awards in London, with eight wines ranking among the top 50 globally. Over 18,000 wines were assessed by an international panel, with Australian entries securing a significant number of accolades, second only to France. This recognition reinforces Australia’s prominent status in the global wine industry. 🌍 South Australia emerged as a standout region, with the Barossa Valley’s Chaffey Bros. Wine Co. earning a coveted Best in Show medal. Co-founder Daniel Chaffey Hartwig expressed elation, comparing the event to the “Olympics of wine.” Similarly, Margaret River’s Stella Bella Wines celebrated top honours for its Luminosa Chardonnay, highlighting Western Australia’s reputation for producing world-class Chardonnay. 🍷 The Decanter awards, renowned as the largest of their kind, featured rigorous blind tastings by 243 experts. Australia claimed 71 medals across various categories. Notably, Tasmanian Pinot Noirs were lauded, cementing Tasmania as a promising region for this varietal. Despite challenges like a domestic oversupply of wine and economic pressures, these wins offer a positive boost for the industry. 🌟 In the face of market fluctuations and evolving global tastes, Australian wineries are adapting with innovative approaches. Chaffey Bros' use of the term Syrah instead of Shiraz signifies a shift towards lighter, more elegant wine styles, appealing to international markets. As Tom Barnes from Stella Bella pointed out, the focus on quality over mass production reflects a new wave in Australian winemaking, signaling a bright future ahead. #AustralianWine #DecanterAwards #WineIndustry #BarossaValley #MargaretRiver #WineInnovation

Australian Wines Shine on Global Stage with Multiple Wins at Prestigious Competitions 🍷 Australian wines have once again taken centre stage internationally, securing top honours at the International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC) and VINUS International Wine & Spirits Competition. At the IWSC, Australia tied with Spain for the highest trophy count, bringing home four awards, including for still dry wines and fortified Muscat. The diversity and quality of Australian wines continue to set them apart, with additional recognition going to Edenvale’s alcohol-removed Sparkling Shiraz, a pioneering achievement in the non-alcoholic wine sector. 🏆 Bremley Vineyard’s 2023 Pinot Noir from Tasmania emerged as the overall winner of the 2024 Pinot Noir Challenge. This marks the fifth consecutive year a Tasmanian winery has secured the top spot. The competition was intense, with Giant Steps’ Pinot Noir from the Yarra Valley coming in a close second. The success of these cool climate wines underscores Australia's growing reputation for producing world-class Pinot Noir. 🍇 In South America, Taylors’ Jaraman Shiraz 2022 was awarded Champion Red Wine at the VINUS International Wine & Spirits Competition. Scoring an impressive 99 points, the $34 Shiraz has solidified its place among the world’s best, earning accolades for the third consecutive year. Taylors also stood out with four of its wines ranking in the top 10 overall, a testament to the excellence of Australian winemaking. 🌍 These recent victories highlight the strong global positioning of Australian wines. Whether through innovation in non-alcoholic beverages or the production of premium wines across diverse regions, Australia continues to lead on the world stage, pushing boundaries and redefining the global wine industry. #AustralianWine #WineAwards #IWSC2024 #PinotNoirChallenge #VINUS2024 #WineIndustry

Another attention grabbing headline « Best wine in Australia « man that is one big claim that is for sure given the quality of wine being made by a number of outstanding wine makers here in Australia. Publications like The Australian do more harm than good with such grandstanding, how do you judge the best wine in Australia from a tasting sample of around 100 wines. More importantly the geographic spread of the judged wines was heavily skewed towards South Australia, NSW could only muster 5 golden tickets to the dance. To me it’s blatant direct marketing of wines stocked by Langtons , driven by their wine club it’s impossible to make so gross and extravagant claims despite the wine in question may be very well made. For independent wine retailers these panels kill there business as many do not focus on the more mainstream, consumers then question their selection and what they stock. I was speaking with a good friend of mine yesterday about this and you could see it hit a very raw nerve indeed as they work bloody hard to deliver exceptional range, diversity and quality. The average consumer sees a publication like this in what they believe to be a trusted source but they are far from free of having both a conflict of interest and very skewed bias. The sooner we move away from such emotive and inflammatory language to describe wines the better no wonder our industry is in trouble. That’s my view for what it is worth many may disagree but at least is the truth. 🤔🤔
