📢 More Exciting News from TYJI! 🎉 Tow Youth Justice Institute at the University of New Haven has been awarded a 2023 OJJDP grant for "Improving the Lives of Youth in Connecticut"! This $600,000 three-year grant will support the work to address Racial and Ethnic Disparities and increase diversion efforts for our Connecticut youth. The goal of “Improving the Lives of Youth in CT”, in collaboration with three sub-awardees ( Center for Children's Advocacy, Child Health & Development Institute (CHDI), and Roca, Inc.) is to provide ample opportunities for our youth's success by: ⭐ Reducing the disproportionate number of youth who come into contact with the juvenile justice system. This will be facilitated by working at the local level with police departments, schools, probation, and other system partners responsible for decision-making regarding arrest, diversion, and court referrals. ⭐ Adapting the original School-Based Diversion Initiative (SBDI) model into an Early Intervention approach for elementary schools, referred to as SBDI-E to address exclusionary discipline in 2-3 elementary schools. This pilot project will address the social, emotional, and behavioral health needs of younger students with the purpose of diverting from exclusionary discipline and improving behavioral health outcomes. ⭐ Conducting a landscape analysis and making recommendations to better address the needs of young women at risk of being involved in the justice system with the goal of improving system(s) response. This initiative is in alignment with the State of Connecticut's Juvenile Justice Policy and Oversight Committee's commitment to integrating and sustaining meaningful youth and family partnerships. Together, we're creating brighter futures for our youth! 🌟 #YouthJustice #CommunityPartnerships #TowYJI #UniversityofNewHaven #OJJDPGrant #ConnecticutYouth

#AdultEducationMatters, doesn't it? This is the AE second program in the Houston area to close its #AdultLiteracy doors. Will there be more to come? And more importantly, why? Why, when we are in the middle of the greatest need for #Education and #Workforce training do we have anchor institutions closing their program doors? Two agencies with a combined service of almost 90 years are no more. Approximately 1,500 #Learners without services. If you believe in the power of #Literacy including and beyond #Reading, then this is a call to action. Let decision makers know the community and financial impact of closing adult education program doors. Action cannot take place without knowledge, and WE are the messengers!!! In the month of #AdultEducation and #FamilyLiteracy, this is not the news we need but it is the spark to get fired up and #Advocate. #AMMAAdelante #AMMA #AEFL #MoveAheadWithAdultEd #Advocacy

• Headteachers v Young Learners • Pupil Exclusions in Primary Schools (Greater London) 🇬🇧 Most of us would agree that education is the key to unlock freedom and realise one’s fullest potential. Exclusion from primary school is not just a disciplinary measure—it is a pivotal moment in a child's educational journey at such a tender age with far-reaching consequences. I am deeply fortunate to be representing parents and their children before the Independent Review Panel, advocating toward reinstatement after the exclusion. This responsibility is one I hold with great respect, knowing the impact these decisions have on a child's future. The process can be highly adversarial, but I stand undaunted in defending children whose needs have not been fully met or who face discrimination. To my fellow educators, administrators, and advocates: 🔹 How can we better address the root causes behind exclusions? 🔹 What more can be done to ensure that schools are equipped to meet diverse needs? 🔹 How do we balance accountability with compassion and inclusivity? Let's continue this vital conversation and work together to build a system where every child feels seen, heard, and supported. #IndependentReviewPanel #MaintainedSchools #PupilReferralUnits #EducationMatters #PupilExclusions #Advocacy #SchoolExclusionService
