After just over a year my time at GRIDSERVE is going to come to an end at the end of October – the organisation is going through massive change and transformation and as it moves into the next phase it’s that someone else takes the PMO reins and drives the next phase of transformation. I am on the search for my next role. It's been a truly amazing journey recruited into build a PMO function to a brilliant, rapidly growing start-up which had no structure, no understanding of the size of its Change & Growth Portfolio, and not even a little bit of reporting or risk management in place. In this time on top of building a PMO function, I also picked up 2 Projects, saved GRIDSERVE over £2M through looking at Business Cases, and even led the Dynamics (D365) Business Systems Team for 5 months whilst a new Head Of was recruited. In the PMO we: 🔹Identified the Digital, Products and Services Portfolio Size 🔹T-Shirt Sized and Prioritised everything 🔹Identified sponsors, business impact, costs, and outcomes 🔹Assessed every item reducing from 233 projects/programmes/innovations to a core 63 🔹Introduced the fundamentals to delivering change successfully - regular reporting, risk and issue management, business cases, SteerCos, financial tracking and reporting 🔹Built out tooling and workflows for Demand Management, Departmental Reporting, Risk, Issues, Assumption, Dependency, and Decision Management 🔹Developed ~60 templates and guides 🔹Wrote regular communications 🔹Managed all contractor onboarding and offboarding including raising POs and Goods Receipting 🔹Financial Planning across the whole portfolio including Budget Submissions 🔹Defined the requirements for the PMO Tooling shifting from PowerPoint and Excel into bespoke configured SharePoint/Power Apps tools with automated workflows built on approvals 🔹Created a fully auditable set of processes which showcase where we have assessed initiatives for security and compliance 🔹Presented the case to adapt and amend to roll out to the rest of GRIDSERVE which has been approved 🔹 We also worked across Technical Design Authority (TDA), weekly Portfolio Review, Programme & Portfolio Steering Groups, Lessons Learned workshops, and all Project/Programme Gates On top of all that: 📌 We’ve built a Project Management Best Practice Guild, and 📌 Built a PMO Delivery Handbook mapping out all the tools, processes, and best practice we’ve implemented to leave GRIDSERVE with the tools required to continue moving forward when we’ve gone. I'm hoping you're all dazzled now! In all seriousness, I'm looking for a senior PMO/Programme role which is remote and outside IR35, so if you hear of anything please send in my direction or give me a call.

Project Managers 🤔 Over the last few days I've been having a few conversations around potential Infor projects with clients. One question being asked a lot is down to Project managers and how beneficial it is to use an independent PM referred to consultancies providing them with one. 🤷♂️ I have compiled the following which I believe is the benefits of hiring an independent PM and why I would recommend it. 👇 1. Objectivity and Impartiality: 💻 Conflict of Interest: Independent PMs make decisions based on the project's best interests, without a vested interest in the consultancy's success. Fair Assessment: They provide unbiased assessments of progress, performance, and quality. 2. Enhanced Accountability: ✨ Direct Accountability: Independent PMs are directly accountable to the hiring organisation, ensuring focus on meeting the project's objectives. Transparency: They offer greater transparency in project reporting and status updates. 3. Cost Efficiency: 📊 Cost Control: Independent PMs can be more cost-effective, avoiding the higher fees and overhead costs of consultancy firms. Flexible Engagement: They can be hired on flexible terms, aligning better with the project’s budget and timeline. 4. Focused Attention: 🧠 Dedicated Focus: Independent PMs are usually dedicated to one project, ensuring a high level of commitment. Client-Centric Approach: Their work is centered around the client's needs and objectives. If you can think of any other benefits then comment them below! I'm keen to hear what the market's view is on this. ~ As as ever, get in touch if you are looking for a new opportunity! 📞 01772 278050 📩 Dominic.case@itworksrec.de

I often wonder why, when recruiting for a 'Senior Project Manager' that companies are totally industry focussed. This is specific to IT, I'm not going to PM building the next bridge over the Thames. Clients want the best of both worlds in CRM/ERP/Finance/HR. Why the nervousness in employing someone who has years of experience and successful delivery? I guess my question is, what do you want out of a PM? Do you want someone who can help your Solution Architect? Someone who can help your development team or the team configuring your system technically? Or do you want someone adept in keeping an eye on progress, budget and making sure your team are glued together. The role of a Senior PM is to manage your project. Ensure that those who are part of the technical delivery team are delivering whilst being looked after and ensuring that Exec are informed and all the good governance stuff that you should know when hiring. Don't stymy your recruiting of PM's by worrying about their technical/Industry experience. Worry about whether or not they can manage your software delivery project, be a team player and make sure it get's delivered. Final note. Make sure they are experienced in giving bad news. It happens. They'll fade off into the background when the news is good.

My 2 cents on the Senior PM hiring process that has been identified: 1. Industry Focus vs. Skillset: While domain knowledge can be valuable, the core competencies of project management—like leadership, communication, and problem-solving—often outweigh specific industry experience. 2. Defining the Role: It’s crucial for organizations to clarify their expectations and the specific challenges their projects present. A successful PM should not only facilitate technical tasks but also ensure cohesion within the team and alignment with stakeholders. 3. Managing Technical and Non-Technical Aspects: Balancing technical oversight with project governance is essential. The ability to liaise effectively between technical teams and executives is a key strength that may not always come from industry-specific experience. 4. Communication of Bad News: The capacity to deliver difficult messages is critical in project management. A PM who can handle tough conversations with transparency fosters trust and credibility, which can be more beneficial than any technical background. 5. Encouraging Broader Recruitment Practices: By focusing on proven management skills and the ability to adapt, organizations can tap into a wider talent pool that may bring fresh perspectives and innovative approaches to project delivery.
A highly experienced Senior Manager (projects/programmes), with the ultimate goal of getting the job done. Huge team player/builder. 30 years experience in delivering successful teams and projects/programmes

👥 PROJECT RESOURCES 👥 We regularly see job ads for Project Managers & other Project roles - FT Fixed Term Contract for x months..... We thought you might appreciate some insights to consider before you choose this approach to resource your projects: ❓️ employing 1 individual limits the knowledge, approach and advice to 1 person's perspective and experience ❓️ the knowledge gained by this individual about your business, your new system and your team during the project is lost at the end of their contract ❓️ the hours required throughout the project vary, so you are paying for someone FT to cover peak requirements ❓️other associated costs - time spent on the recruitment process, recruitment fees, oncosts, sick leave, annual leave, HR & Payroll administration, etc 🤔 What if....you could get better value for your $$$$ and: ✅️ access a team of PMO specialists with wide and varied perspectives and experiences ✅️ maintain knowledge gained through an ongoing, long-term relationship ✅️ pay only for the time needed ✅️ remove administrative costs and burden as well as gaining: ✅️ true client advocates ✅️ a team who's sole focus is the success of your project ✅️ an approach that supports aligning your digital strategy to your business strategy Wouldn't you want to find out more? I concur. The role of a PM doesn't change no matter what the industry or team/function involved is. And yet so many industries/teams/functions (looking at you specifically construction - no laborer or skilled specialist wakes up and decides to be a Project Manager one day - their goal is to be a foreman, an architect once they finish school or moving on to something else to pay the bills) insist on asking for an HR expert, CPA that wants a second job apparently for....reason, or an expert in some niche or obscure function that only people already working in said industry would know. In all cases NONE of those people are interested in striving to be a PM. That's not a step up for them. Management roles within their industry is the goal. If someone can steer the ship/lead the troops/insert other cliche here and happen to currently work at a hospital or an insurance company or a bank they are MORE than capable of doing the SAME EXACT WORK ANYWHERE ELSE! It's called translatable skills for a reason. If a PM needs work that doesn't happen to wear a hard hat or run payroll or hire/fire people currently stop dismissing them and holding out for that non-existent day laborer that aspires to be (what any self-aware PM will admit to the role being in reality) a glorfied secretary/babysitter. They don't exist! Wake up Corporate America. You're only hurting yourselves and missing out on skilled workers by pigeon holing yourselves.
